A long-standing anagomeshi (grilled conger eel over rice) restaurant established in 1901 located a two minute walk from Miyajimaguchi Station. The restaurant’s famed anagomeshi features fresh-grilled conger eel (anago) piled tightly packed on top of a bed of rice cooked with a broth made from conger eel bones. This long-selling favorite was originally created to offer as a bento box lunch sold in front of the nearby train station when the restaurant was founded. The restaurant is also famous for the lines of customers waiting to eat inside that constantly form out its door. Customers eating in can enjoy flavors and dishes differing from those offered for bento box lunches, such as piping hot, fresh-made anagomeshi and shirayaki conger eel grilled without seasoning. Bento box lunches can be reserved. No reservations are accepted for the restaurants sit-down space.

A long established momiji manju store founded in the late Meiji period and located in Miyajima Town, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The shop sells momiji manju filled with homemade bean paste made with adzuki beans from Hokkaido. They sell only two varieties, koshian, a smooth bean paste filling, and tsubuan, a more granular, lumpy bean filling. The castella dough of the cake is plump and soft, and remains so even after a few days, making it a perfect gift or souvenir.

Hiroshima Areas

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
