- Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho Yokogo
- Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Sandankyo Gorge has been awarded three stars, the highest amount possible, by France’s authoritative Blue Guide travel guide. This pool in the gorge is counted among the gorge’s five most beautiful areas, alongside Sarutobi, Nidan Falls, Sandan Waterfall, and Mitsutaki Falls. Boasting some of the best scenery in the gorge, the pool’s name literally translates to “Black Pool” and is derived from the black appearance of the water at its deepest depths. Enclosed by 100-meter-high cliffs on either side, ferry boats can take visitors across the water and give you the chance to look up at the towering, majestic walls from the surface of the river.

- Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho Yokogo
- This scenic destination is located in the almost exact center of Sandankyo Gorge, a beautiful gorge filled with clear water and lush greenery. Visitors to the gorge can enjoy some of the most spectacular gorge scenery in western Japan, but this popular area in particular is counted among the gorge’s five most stunning. A stretch of river enclosed by cliffs over 20 meters tall on either side, ferry boats travel back and forth across it. The area’s name literally means “Monkey Jump” and is derived from the groups of monkeys which once jumped the cliffs. Notably, instead of a ferry using oars like other similar areas in the gorge, visitors can also cross the river here via a rope bridge. Nidan Falls, located close by, is isolated and can only be reached by riding a ferry here.

- Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho
- This waterfall is located in Sandankyo Gorge, one of the most secluded areas in western Japan, and here visitors can enjoy walking in a world resembling a traditional landscape painting. The powerful waterfall gushes with a thunderous roar and can be reached by taking a ferry boat from Sarutobi. Counted as one of the five most beautiful areas in Sandankyo Gorge, its name literally means “Two Tier Falls,” and indeed it once had two tiers, but in 1988, the rock wall of the first tier collapsed after a heavy downpour, and today the waterfall only has one tier. Visitors can actually watch as the water of the falls prizes away the falls’ rock wall. The falls are located around a two and a half hour walk from the main entrance to Sandankyo Gorge. The path to the falls may be closed due to natural disaster, and thus visitors are encouraged to check in advance.

Hiroshima Areas
There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
