    This history museum in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City was opened in 2012. It is located inside one of the homes built by Floyd Schmoe for the citizens of Hiroshima after the atomic bombing. The building was restored and relocated to its current location. There, visitors can learn about the support that Hiroshima received from people around the world after the atomic bombing. Visitors at the museum, which is visited by many tourists, can receive a guided tour by the museum’s staff (reservation required).

    "A Shinto shrine located in Nishi Ward, Hiroshima City which is dedicated to Empress Jingu among others. After the daimyo lord Mori Motonari visited the shrine prior to the Battle of Miyajima to pray for victory, the shrine came to be known for granting victory and success to worshippers. The shrine is also affectionately known as the ""carp shrine,"" a play on a name for the area, ""Koi,"" which can also mean ""carp."" In addition, the shrine is famously known as the source of the Hiroshima Carp baseball team's name and is visited by many worshippers."

    This cenotaph located in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is officially known as the Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace. Constructed according to plans that fit the spirit of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial City Construction Law, the cenotaph inscription was determined in 1952 and an unveiling ceremony was held that year in August. The names of the atomic bomb victims are inscribed on a register in a stone chest that is under the granite hut, and the phrase “Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil” is inscribed.

    The cathedral of the Catholic Noboricho Church in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture was completed in 1954 as a symbol for peace and a memorial to the victims of the atomic bomb. Wounded in the bombing himself, the Reverend Hugo Lassalle, proposed the idea, and with the support of the Pope, collected contributions from all around the world to build his church as a memorial to world peace. The modern and majestic architectural design fit for a new post-war era was designed by architect Murano Togo. The building has been designated as a national Important Cultural Property.
  • Children's Peace Monument

    A monument in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the city of Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture; as large numbers of paper cranes are hung here year round, it is also known as the “Tower of the Thousand Paper Cranes.” The model for the figure on the top of the monument was Sadako Sasaki, a girl who died at the age of 12 due to leukemia from the atomic bombing. After her death, fund-raising efforts around the country gathered money to build the monument in 1958 to comfort the souls of children who lost their lives to the bomb and to pray for world peace. The monument is visited by many tourists as well as students on field trips.

They also hold a variety of activities including special exhibitions, outdoor observation parties, and interactive experiences.

    A hot spring health resort in Saeki Ward, Hiroshima City. It has been designated as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property and gained prominence as the hot spring resort for Lord Asano, the lord of Hiroshima domain during the Edo Period. There is an old bathing area still present above the current Yu-no-Yama hot spring. Ink writings of bathers remain written on the wall so you can see how it was in the olden days.

    This museum in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City was opened in the remains of an old schoolhouse, that survived atomic bombing. Here you can see items gathered from the bomb-site including the letter that is the basis of the inscription on the Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace. Prior reservations are required for group visits.
  • Flame of Peace

    The Flame of Peace (torch) is located inside the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The pedestal represents the shape of two hands pressed together at the wrist, with palms outstretched towards the sky. It was built to express condolence for victims unable to satisfy their thirst for water, as well as the desire for nuclear abolition and enduring world peace. The flame was lit in 1964 and will continue to burn until nuclear weapons no longer exist. Every year the Flame of Peace Relay is held and the relay torch is lit from here and then makes a loop around the cities, towns and villages of Hiroshima Prefecture.

    A bell built in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture which was erected in 1964 in the hop of the abolition of atomic weaponry and everlasting world peace. All visitors are free to ring the bell. The bell was designed by Living National Treasure Masahiko Katori. The bell hangs under a dome-shaped roof modeled after the cosmos and is decorated with a borderless map of the world. There are other peace bells in the park—one displayed in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum which is run on the August 6 Peace Memorial Ceremony, and another in the Peace Clock Tower which rings each morning at 8:15 a.m.

    A museum which collects and displays materials relating to late Edo period man of letters Rai San’yo and the Rai family located in Fukuro Town, Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Built on the site of an estate which belonged to the Rai family, the Japanese-style museum consists of a one story exhibition space, tea room, and Japanese garden. A recreation of the room where Rai San’yo was confined during his youth is designated a National Historic Site. The museum’s collection includes a large number of calligraphic works, letters, personal articles, and books by and belonging to San’yo. The museum also displays materials relating to the history and culture of early modern Hiroshima.

    Enjoy the sights offered by the “city of water” from atop a boat on this river cruise. Boarding takes place on the Motoyasugawa Pier in front of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The entire trip requires about 25 minutes and takes passengers on a cruise along the Ota River, passing by the Genbaku Dome (Atomic Bomb Dome), a World Heritage Site, on the way. The boat, which used to be used by the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki, has a very exotic design. Feel the gentle breeze on top of the water and experience Hiroshima in a way that walking can’t match. The boarding area is about a three-minute walk from Genbaku Dome-mae Station on the Hiroden Line.

    This is a high speed ferry connecting Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima Island. The trip on the ferry takes about 45 minutes. It is a popular route as travelers can enjoy the scenery of Hiroshima’s cityscape from the river and the ocean.

    This memorial tower stands just to the south of the Genbaku Dome (Atomic Bomb Dome). Situated in a tree-enshrouded park, the tower is 12-meters-tall and consists of five tiers. The tower was erected to memorialize and console the spirits of approximately 10 thousand students who died during World War II after being mobilized to compensate for labor shortages, as well as those who were victims of the atomic bombing. A statue of a goddess of peace stands under the tower, and four relief panels behind the tower depict the mobilized students working. The tower was erected in 1967. Today, a service memorializing the atomic bombing is held in front of the tower each year on August 6th.

    This souvenir and gift shop is located inside the ticket gate of JR Hiroshima Station, the entranceway to Hiroshima. Because of its location and abundant selection of items, it is a great place for Shinkansen riders to pick up a few souvenirs. Here you can find a wide variety of famous Hiroshima souvenirs, including staple Momiji Manju buns, Hattendo custard buns sold across the country, and senbei rice crackers made using an entire oyster pressed into their center.

    Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Sandankyo Gorge has been awarded three stars, the highest amount possible, by France’s authoritative Blue Guide travel guide. This pool in the gorge is counted among the gorge’s five most beautiful areas, alongside Sarutobi, Nidan Falls, Sandan Waterfall, and Mitsutaki Falls. Boasting some of the best scenery in the gorge, the pool’s name literally translates to “Black Pool” and is derived from the black appearance of the water at its deepest depths. Enclosed by 100-meter-high cliffs on either side, ferry boats can take visitors across the water and give you the chance to look up at the towering, majestic walls from the surface of the river.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
