This is an archive located on Ookunoshima Island in Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The island was once a poison gas manufacturing plant of the former Japanese Imperial Army and producing a large amount of poison gas weapons until the end of the Second World War. It was opened in 1988 to convey the horrific past and sacrifice of many lives during the poison gas manufacturing process. The museum exhibits artifacts from officials at the time, and material related to poison gas production. On the island, there are also traces of canons, electric power plants, and poison gas reservoirs.

The museum is good for giving more context about the abandoned buildings scattered around the island, and the islands history. Most of the descriptions are in Japanese, but we were given a guide in...

An elementary school (the former Fukuromachi Senior Elementary School) in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, situated just 460 meters from the atomic bomb blast center. All of the wooden school buildings were destroyed by the blast from the atomic bomb and a large number of children and teachers who failed to evacuate were killed. The outer shell of the west wing of the school building with its reinforced concrete was all that remained. It was used as a relief center for victims of the blast and as a place to search for lost relatives and students. Even today you can still see the messages that people wrote with chalk remaining on the walls. Part of the west wing is now open to the public as a museum where visitors can see the message walls and other things from that devastating day.

This was on my shortlist of must see places in Hiroshima and I visited it before the former Bank of Tokyo and the Peace Memorial Museum. The individual accounts of pupils, staff and residents are...

This history museum is located in Hatsukaichi City. Documents and folk culture items relating to the history and culture of Itsukushima Island, also called Miyajima, are preserved and on display at this museum. The historical artifacts concerning the Taira clan, who worshiped at this Itsukushima shrine, are of foremost interest. The erstwhile life of the residents of Miyajima Island can be tangibly experienced through the plethora of items, such as the rickshaws and earlier mailboxes, and memento ladles. A portion of the museum is housed in the former dwelling and clay storehouse of the Egami family, who were wealthy merchants prospering during the late Edo period and Meiji period. The beautifully manicured Japanese garden with a pond can be enjoyed from the main dwelling. The museum is a 3-minute walk from the Itsukushima Shrine exit.

Sue ware and Haji ware pottery used to make salt around the fifth century, have also been excavated in the area.
