"This is the only workshop in Japan that still presents magatama beads to the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, and it was founded in an area known for bead-making that became the set for myths. The workshop continues to make ""Izumo magatama"" used when the ""Izumo Kokuzo"" of the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine would conduct rituals at the imperial palace for new emperors. It is in the country's leading production area for beads that has produced large quantities of magatama and beads since ancient times. The mysterious shape and deep, beautiful color still fascinate people, and make them feel like they have a mysterious spiritual power. ""Yasakani no Magatama"" is one of the three types of sacred treasures that mark the succession of the throne, along with the ""Yata no Kagami"" mirror and ""Kusanagi"" sword."

This is the central facility of Izumo Tamatsukuri Historic Park, where many workshops for making magatama and tube beads have been excavated throughout a vast site of about 2.8 hectares. It is the only museum in Japan that introduces the art and history of ancient bead-making. There is a permanent exhibition on ancient Izumo bead-making, displays on modern Izumo agate work, as well as of tools and products with agate work that was done until the Taisho (1912-1926) and Showa (1926-1989) periods. There is also an exhibition of Fujina ware, which has been popular in this area since the middle of the Edo period, and you can see the warm yellow glaze of the works.

"This pottery kiln with a history of nearly 250 years began as an old kiln for the Matsue clan in the Edo period (1603-1868). It is located about a four-minute drive from JR Nogi Station, and continues to produce traditional Fujina ware and pottery with modern designs that blend in with modern life. It once worked on tea utensils favored by Fumai-ko, the clan leader who was a master of the tea ceremony. Because he liked replicas of masterpieces of the time, they are characterized by having a delicate and elegant appearance reminiscent of Kyoto. In recent years, the kiln has been working on things such as warm and gentle blue containers using Izumo celadon and ""namakoyu"" glazing, as well as containers with exotic patterns."

This shop just in front of Matsue castle specializes in agate crafts. Founded in 1877, they specialize in creating Magatama stones, small comma-shaped traditional charms, made from the increasingly rare Izumo-mined blue agate (also jasper or Izumo stone). Their original magatama designs are based on ancient patterns and created with long, painstaking care. The thickness, curve, and polished texture are all obsessively worked to create a unique finished form. Their deeply blue stones are made with all the pride of the Sanin region's oldest stone shop.

This agate craft and natural mineral shop was founded in 1921. This region is filled with the atmosphere of Izumo myths, and has carried on the tradition of making sacred magatama stones since ages past. Magatama stones are mysterious objects of worship, dating back to the distant past and said to resemble both a sprouting seed, and a human fetus. Today, they are often worn in a prayer for health, emotional stability, and recovery from illness. The attached workshop offers classes on making your own original bracelet or phone strap (reservations required). You can also reserve a tour to observe their own workshop where they use traditional skills to make these mystical stones.

  • Tawayama Ruins Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Shimane Matsue-shi Noshiracho 32-3
"This historic landmark park is adjacent to Matsue City Hospital. The wide-open space houses recreated dugout shelters and pit-dwellings. Archaeologists discovered the remains of over 20 shelters in this area, called ""Matsue's Navel."" A triple-trench goes around the peak of the hill, and in the center, there are raised-floor houses with nine pillars. The other buildings lined up around the outside of the dried moat have a very unusual design, and create a unique sight for Japan. Experts believe they date back to the early- to middle late-Yayoi period. There are well-maintained trails along the ruins, and you can easily climb to the peak for a view of Lake Shinji and Matsue city."

  • Gohonmatsu Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Shimane Matsue-shi Mihonosekicho Mihonoseki
This park is on a moderately high 100-130 meter above sea level park. The name comes from five pine trees that were once used as landmarks for ships. The current pines are the third generation of trees here. One of the trees was cut down by order of the domain lord, and this became the basis for the folk song Seki no Gohonmatsu (The barrier of five pine trees). There is a region planted with about 5,000 azaleas, making this one of the prefecture's leading such spots. The blooming season most years is from late April through early May. The azaleas in full bloom against the backdrop of Miho bay to the south, Yumigahama beach, and Nakaumi lake is a sight to behold.

    Travel / Tourism
    Shimane Matsue-shi Kitahoricho 322
This indigo dyeing workshop carries on the tradition of Hirose Gasuri, a prefectural Intangible Cultural Property. This facility is near the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, and sells indigo dyed goods as well as offering activities allowing you to make your own. The traditional craft of Hirose Gasuri uses a wide variety of medium sized geometric patterns as well as picturesque patterns, and is said to have found its beginning in a dyeing style taught in nearby Yonago in 1824, in the Hoki Province that is today the western part of Tottori Prefecture. The style is characterized by precise geometric patterns marked by stark contrast in the blue dyeing (using naturally fermented indigo liquid), with the threads woven to bring out the patterns with exactness. At this workshop, you can use rubber bands to create your own design in their Dyeing Activity, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece for the cost of a single coin!

    Shimane Matsue-shi Suetsuguhonmachi
This statue of Karakoro Daikoku is found on Matsue's Kyomise shopping street. This Daikokuten, standing on the south side of Karakoro Plaza, is believed to be blended on the divinity Okuninushi no Kami, who is enshrined at Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. This Daikokuten, with his gentle smile, is the guardian of the shopping area. Locals speak that if they pray after clapping before this statue, it can bring cheer. It's also known as a symbol of strong bonds, and many couples choose to have their wedding ceremonies here. There are love and luck fortune stands set up in front of Lord Daikoku, the Koimikuji for love, and Kaiunmikuji for good luck.
  • Yakumonuri Yamamoto lacquerware
    Travel / Tourism
    Shimane Matsue-shi Suetsuguhonmachi 45
This lacquerware shop is on Matsue Ohashi-dori avenue, extending from the north end of the Matsue Ohashi bridge across Lake Shinji. Founded in 1890, it has helped to carry on the traditional craft of Yakumo-nuri lacquer, which developed as part of traditional tea ceremony culture. Yakumonuri layers transparent lacquer over patterns and pictures drawn with colored lacquer, and is marked by how age and use actually improves the translucency of the lacquer. It has gentle, almost damp-feeling texture, and it only grows more lustrous and attractive with age. This shop has used traditional skills to create a modern style, as well, creating amber lacquer cups without any base pattern. Variations in light can cause the color to range from amber to red, or even purple, for a singular item of outstanding elegance.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
