This shop just in front of Matsue castle specializes in agate crafts. Founded in 1877, they specialize in creating Magatama stones, small comma-shaped traditional charms, made from the increasingly rare Izumo-mined blue agate (also jasper or Izumo stone). Their original magatama designs are based on ancient patterns and created with long, painstaking care. The thickness, curve, and polished texture are all obsessively worked to create a unique finished form. Their deeply blue stones are made with all the pride of the Sanin region's oldest stone shop.

    店構えがいかにも高級な感じがする勾玉やメノウを扱っているお店です。でも入ってみると、ストラップなど若者向けの製品もあったりして、カジュアルと高級品の両方ありますので、結構楽しめます。

This agate craft and natural mineral shop was founded in 1921. This region is filled with the atmosphere of Izumo myths, and has carried on the tradition of making sacred magatama stones since ages past. Magatama stones are mysterious objects of worship, dating back to the distant past and said to resemble both a sprouting seed, and a human fetus. Today, they are often worn in a prayer for health, emotional stability, and recovery from illness. The attached workshop offers classes on making your own original bracelet or phone strap (reservations required). You can also reserve a tour to observe their own workshop where they use traditional skills to make these mystical stones.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
