A pleasure cruise which goes on a 50 minute tour of the moat surrounding the National Treasure-designated Matsue Castle in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. The cruise’s coarse is dotted with famous and elegant castle town sights such as Shiomi Nawate-dori Street and the Former Samurai District. The water birds, flowering plants growing by the water, and other highly seasonal scenery is also a must-see. The cruise boat itself is eight meters long, two meters wide, and covered with a small roof; a toasty kotatsu (table with a blanket and heater underneath) is provided in winter. The Hori River the boat travels is spanned by 17 bridges, and when the boat travels under particularly low bridges, the roof must be lowered to pass.

The experience of having to duck down so that the roof can be lowered was fun. We had the additional pleasure of having two volunteer guides from the Matsue Goodwill Guide Group to assist us in...

Lake Shinji, designated as one of Japan’s 100 most beautiful sunsets, is known for its amazingly beautiful scenery and for having the largest catch of shijimi clams in Japan. It takes about one hour to enjoy the scenery of Lake Shinji on one of the sightseeing cruises on the pleasure boat, Hakuchou. The sunset cruise, which departs when the sun is going down, is one of their most popular boat trips. A sad legend recalls how a young bride who was bullied by her mother-in-law remains on the only island floating in the lake, Yomegashima Island (literally meaning “young bride island”). Boat port number two is approximately five minutes on foot from JR Matsue Station.

Even though it was raining, I was able to see the view. I was also able to feel the wideness of the lake and enjoy the view around the mountain. Also, it is very safe since the crews are keeping the...

It's approximately 30 minutes by car from the Matsue City area. The Kaka-no-Kukedo Course takes in the Shin Kukedo sea cave of lore and the Kyu Kukedo cave, visible from land. Rosoku-jima (“Candle Island”) is an unusually-shaped rock that rises to a height of around 20 meters above the waves, and which is famous as a spectacular sight at dusk in the setting sun. It derives its name from the fact that, when, the sun is going down in the evening, the top of the rock appears to be lit up like a huge candle. Sightseeing boats depart from Fukuura Wharf and Akasaki Wharf, timing their departure to be near Rosoku-jima at sunset. During the daytime, or if the boats are not operating that day, visitors can also get a good view of the rock from the Rosoku-jima Observation Platform.

An underwater viewing boat that departs from Hishiura Port bound for Saburoiwa, one of Ama's best known sites. The cruise lasts for about 50 minutes. The area around Saburoiwa is known for its abundant seaweed and rich variety of fish. It was the first famous diving spot off the coast along the Sea of Japan. It's said the Amanbow was the Sea of Japan's first underwater viewing boat. The underwater scenery and what kind of fish are darting about depend on the season, weather, and time of day. A night cruise lets you take in the bioluminescent creatures beneath the waves.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
