    Shimane Hamada Kanagicho Shichijo I735
This tourist farm is a five-minute drive from Kanagi Smart Interchange off the Hamada Expressway. Run by the Chudenko Group's Berryne Inc., they offer strawberry and grape picking. Their greenhouses, embraced by verdant nature, are among the biggest in the prefecture. You can pick strawberries from January into May, and Pione grapes from late August to early October. The elevated strawberry planters are at eye-height for children, and grow a variety of strawberries like popular Benihoppe, low-acidity Akihime, and vitamin-C-rich Sachinoka. Picking is by reservation only for leisurely fruit fun.

This farm offers pick-and-eat strawberries at 2000yen (adult) for 45 minutes. You will be given a small container to contain the fruits as you walk along to pick. At entrance of the greenhouse, you...

    Shimane Yasugi-shi Enoshimacho 12-1
A mandarin orange orchard catering to tourists and certified by the prefectural governor, a first in the San'in region. The growers are dedicated to building the soil for the succulent mandarin oranges on this land buffeted by the breeze off of Lake Nakaumi. The orchard operates from mid-October to early December. They grow five varieties of oranges, each with unique characteristics; these include Nichinan Ichigo, a very early variety developed in Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, and Yurawase, which is deeply flavorful and super juicy. The orchard is on level ground, making picking the mandarins easy for everyone from kids to seniors.
  • Akagikogen Kanko Apple Orchard

    Shimane Iishi-gun Iinancho Shimoakana 2814
This tourist farm is close to Roadside Station Akagi Kogen. They grow specially selected apples in a healthy, secure environment under the blazing sun. There are a total of eight varieties to pick on the farm. The trees stand out for their special Y-shaped support, to allow the sun to hit all the leaves, and increase their resilience to wind and snowfall. Most years, the picking season is from early September through mid-November. In summer, from August to September, you can pick blueberries, as well. Since they don't put any time limit on, you can take your time and pick fruit at your own pace.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
