This museum presents the achievements and life of metallurgy pioneer Professor Kuniichi Tawara through exhibits discussing his research and results and displays containing writings, lecture notes, and other items used by the man. The professor achieved many things in life, including being the first person to do on-site studies of tatara foot-operated smelting furnaces, a time-honored Japanese technique which had long been kept a closely-guarded secret; and revealing the mysteries behind the beauty of Japanese swords.

The Okuizumo Tatara & Katana Museum has exhibitions on the history of the Tatara (traditional Japanese steelmaking method) in recent centuries and on the Nittoho Tattara (a Tatara steel-making furnace which was established in 1977 to ensure a reliable supply of the type of steel needed for making traditional Japanese swords), along with displays of swords made using traditional Tamahagane steel. Videos and replicas are used to explain the steelmaking process in an easy-to-understand way, making this a good museum to bring the kids to. Mr. Kobayashi, a sword-smith based in Okuizumo, gives demonstrations of traditional Japanese steel-forging and sword-making techniques twice a month, which are well worth seeing.

I was fortunate to experience the sword making by myself. It was so amazing experience for me, Making katana by Tatara process is an art, I highly recommend people to witness it.

The Yakumotatsu Fudoki-no-oka is a museum dedicated to the Yakumotatsu Fudoki-no-oka archeological site. The museum is housed in a reinforced concrete single-storey raised-floor style building that resembles a burial mound when viewed from either the front or the rear. The museum’s contents include precious artifacts excavated from the Yakumotatsu Fudoki-no-oka site, including a Haniwa (clay figurine) depicting a deer looking back over its shoulder, a big sword bearing the inscription Nukutabe-no-Omi inlaid with silver, etc., as well as a copy of the Izumo-no-kuni Fudoki manuscript, a diorama showing what the area would have looked like during the Nara period, etc. The observation platform on the roof provides superb views over the whole of the Yakumotatsu Fudoki-no-oka site.

It is equipped with a 75-centimeter computer-controlled theodolite Nasmyth telescope, with one of the largest apertures among astronomical telescopes open to the public in Japan. Mt. Makurase overlooks the confluence of the Tsuwano and Takatsu rivers and is an area free of light from the town. From the compact structure in a dense grove, you can get an unobstructed view of the star-lit skies. It sees lots of visitors throughout the year and is a symbolic spot for this ""Star Village."""

During the Yayoi period, huge Yosumi burial mounds were created in the Izumo region, which involved a considerable expenditure of time and effort. Nishidani Tomb No. 3 is an example of the perfected form of the Yosumi burial mound; the Izumo Yayoinomori Museum, which is located near the Nishidani tombs, shows visitors how the Izumo rulers were buried, making effective use of large models. The Museums’ permanent exhibition showcases some of the large quantity of earthenware vessels that were excavated from Nishidani Tomb No. 3, and also has displays on Izumo in the Yayoi period. There is an experiential activity area where visitors can try their hand at making Yayoi-style clothing and necklaces, etc.

The museum has on display a collection of pieces from all over the country with a particular focus on Shimane Prefecture which includes ceramics and lacquer ware used in people’s everyday lives, wooden items, textiles, dyed objects and metal works, etc. The Nagayamon Gate, built in the Edo period, was erected by the same master builder who constructed the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. "This museum makes use of the former site of a quarry for the precious tuffaceous sandstone ""Kimachi stone,"" which is produced only in the area around the Kimachi area of Shinji-cho. It introduces the history and culture of Kimachi stones, the raw material of the traditional craft ""Izumo stone lanterns."" After passing through a 65-meter-long tunnel made of Kimachi stone, the quarry is where stone was actually excavated by hand. High quality stone was historically used for the stone coffins of the Kofun period (250-538), and in the Edo period (1603-1868), it is said to have been considered so important that it was forbidden to take it outside the domain without permission. It holds a variety of events, including demonstrations by the Kimachi Stone Lantern Cooperative and hands-on experiences making Kimachi stone carvings, making it possible for Kimachi stone is become more familiar to visitors."

The near-future design was based on the Mihonoseki meteor, which fell to earth in 1992. The Meteor Museum on the 4th floor displays the meteor itself, which is an estimated 4.6 billion years old. There are picture panels and models of the meteor strike site, and actual damaged roof panels and carpet from the event are on display as well, to offer an up-close taste of the impact itself. It's a popular destination for visitors from all over the country as a key spot in Mihonoseki town.

Held on January 3 each year, the Kitcho-san festival involves a procession around the town carrying 10-meter-high banners caked “Kitcho-ban” that are embroidered with the characters for Toshitoku-jin (the Goddess of Auspicious Directions). The Kitchokan showcases the “Kitcho-ban” banner and the history, culture and traditional ceremonies of the Taisha Town. The Kitchokan building is constructed in the style of a Shinto shrine; the glittering gold-colored lucky “fans” on the roof are particularly striking. There is a tourist information desk and restrooms, making this a good place to get tourist information for the Izumo area.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
