- Some of the Chugoku region's most prominent marshes lie in a valley 400 meters above sea level amidst the highlands extending east of Mt. Inaba a 30-minute drive from JR Iwami Station. Marshes of various sizes are scattered along a stream and Osawa Pond in the area; a habitat for some 100 varieties of march plants, it has been designated a National Natural Monument. The area is famous for its colony of rabbitear irises, which bloom from mid-May to early June. Interestingly, the rabbitear irises which grow here will fail to take root if transplanted elsewhere. Carnivorous plants such as the round-leaved sundew also grow here.
