    Tottori Kurayoshi-shi Sekiganecho Sekiganeshuku 1218
"This Buddhist temple dedicated to Kshitigarbha is located in Sekigane Onsen, a hot spring district whose history stretches back 1,300 years. Encircled by greenery, the temple enshrines a wooden statue depicting Kshitigarbha in the half lotus position which is affectionately known to locals as the ""Seki no Jizo-san."" Founded in 756, the temple is the oldest in the area and, according to legend, the great monk Kobo Daishi used the power of Buddhism to cause a miraculous spring to well forth on its grounds. The temple's massive statue of Kshitigarbha is 358 centimeters tall and is an impressive sight. The statue's exquisite detailing, including the clothing, severe facial expression, and powerful body from chest to abdomen are all characteristic of the Kamakura period in which it was made."

This townscape, a symbol of Kurayoshi, follows the Tama River flowing north of Mt. Utsubuki. The elegant, 400-meter-long stretch of townscape consists of numerous white stucco buildings topped with red tile roofs. In the Edo period, the town grew and flourished around a jin'ya government administrative headquarters; today, the area has been designated the Kurayoshi City Utsubukitamagawa Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and visitors can imagine what life was like here in ancient times. The buildings, originally used as sake breweries and soy sauce making workshops, are now used to host local specialty product shops, cafes, galleries, and a variety of other establishments. The distinctive red roof tiles are one of the San'in regions unique cultural features. The tiles are fired at over 1,200° C and are extremely resistant to cold weather damage.

    Tottori Tottori-shi Kokufucho Okamasu 285
"This Buddhist temple is located adjacent to the Okamasu no Ishido, a structure also known as the ""mystery stone temple"" because it is not known who built it or for what purpose. This temple is famous for possessing fusuma sliding screens bearing paintings by Meiji period Tottori born painter Reisen Yaotani. Of the 16 paintings, ""Ohato,"" which depicts the stormy Sea of Japan, is particularly stunning. Yaotani is said to have created these screen paintings to express thanks for the sympathy and kindness he received from the temple's head priest and parishioners during the period of wartime evacuation in spite of the lack of supplies."
