This museum uses written and other materials to present the achievements of Kumagusu Minakata, natural historian and folklorist from Wakayama Prefecture. The museum displays over 700 items, including his beloved glasses, research equipment, and samples of plants collected overseas. There is also an exhibit where visitors can view via microscope the slime mold Minakata gave a lecture on to Emperor Hirohito. Located on the tip of a peninsula, the 360-degree panoramic view from the museum’s roof is stunning. (Note: The museum is currently closes for construction. The main and new buildings are scheduled to open March 19, 2017.)

This temple with a roughly 1,300-year history is about 25 minutes by car from the spa town of Nanki-Shirahama Onsen. It was established by En-no-Gyoja, the founder of the mountain ascetic practice known as Shugendo. The temple's principal object of worship is Bato Kanzeon Bosatsu. It is said to be the oldest and largest sacred spot for better fortune and warding off evil in southern Wakayama Prefecture, and can accommodate whatever wish you may have. It is also known for its cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and autumn leaves. In addition to monthly Goma fire rituals, their prayer and memorial services held throughout the year are open to all.

    1月の三連休であったので初詣客でにぎわっていました。たまたま、秘仏御開帳が行われていて、新年からラッキーでした。

"Located next to Shirahama Town's Sakata Park, the museum and shrine here share the same premises. The art museum displays 150 pieces on Lamaism, Hinduism, and Esoteric Japanese Buddhism; including Buddhist statuary normally not open to view (Photography is prohibited in the hall). Right as you leave the art museum, you'll find Kanki Shrine (Sakata Shrine). Known for the boons of marital happiness, pregnancy and smooth delivery, and match making, its home to the stones of the Mt. Sakata Ritual Site used more than 1,300 years ago. What's more, as Prince Arima once visited Shirahama Onsen, they offer a photo service called the “Asuka Romance Experience"" where you can get your picture taken wearing Asuka period clothing."

    Wakayama Pref. Nishimurogunshirahamachou Seto 744
This shrine at the base of Gongenzaki Cape in Shirahama Town, Nishimuro County is known for the white sand beach of its grounds. The main gods it honors are Izanami no mikoto, Hayatama no O no kami, and Kotosaka no O no mikoto. The shrine took its name during the Meiji Restoration when Buddhism and Shinto were officially separated. A large sacred cliff rises behind the main hall, a vestige of the Kumano Region's nature worship. With a walking path along the coast and the nationally designated Natural Monument of the Shirahama Mudstone Dike, it's a good place for a stroll while taking in the woods and the sea.

"Honkakuji, also known as Kaidera ""shell temple,"" is a twenty-minute drive from the Nanki Shirahama Interchange on the Kisei Expressway. It is a subsidiary temple of Chion-in temple, the Chinzei school of the Jodo-shu Sect of Buddhism. Successive generations of abbots have collected over 30,000 shells of one thousand varieties, some of them rare scientific specimens, especially the Honkakujihigai, discovered in 1929 and named after the temple. This collection of shells is stored and displayed at the temple. The temple presented rare shells to the lords of the Kishu Domain, one of Tokugawa Gosanke, the three privileged branches of the Tokugawa family, and even now, a memorial tablet for the lords is an object of veneration."

"This museum is located a 15-minute drive via Prefectural Route 34 from the Nanki Shirahama Interchange on the Kisei Expressway. As befits its location in Wakayama, ""the land of trees,"" this building, imbued with the scent of natural wood, is made of cedar cypress wood and stands in Heisogen Park, a highland that affords a view of the town of Shirahama. There is an experiential learning stadium that makes use of video, as well as information and materials about onsen (hot springs) all over Japan, the chemical components and effects of Shirahama hot springs, and the history and everyday culture of the area, are displayed in an enjoyable and easily understood way. The tables on the ground floor, made from local Kishu wood, are a place for park visitors to relax."
