    Wakayama Pref. Nishimurogunshirahamachou 2927-52
This is a cave formed by years of sea erosion and is set into one of the famous sheer cliffs of Japan, the Sandanbeki cliff. It is a spot for invaluable study of fossilized ripples of stone caused by waves and currents, and rock crevasses surging with the tide. It is said that this cave was the hideout for the Kumano navy ships in the Genpei War during the Heian Period. Inside the cave is a restored Kumano navy barrack, and it enshrines Japan’s largest bronze benzaiten deity of water, the Muro-dai-benzaiten.

This cave is a bit scary but interesting place. Entrance fee is ¥1300. 夜の観光も行っている日がありました。 足湯はやっていませんでした(ご時世?)。 千畳敷から徒歩20分程です。 エレベーターで洞窟まで降りるのですが、中は滑りやすいため注意して歩きました。

This museum uses written and other materials to present the achievements of Kumagusu Minakata, natural historian and folklorist from Wakayama Prefecture. The museum displays over 700 items, including his beloved glasses, research equipment, and samples of plants collected overseas. There is also an exhibit where visitors can view via microscope the slime mold Minakata gave a lecture on to Emperor Hirohito. Located on the tip of a peninsula, the 360-degree panoramic view from the museum’s roof is stunning. (Note: The museum is currently closes for construction. The main and new buildings are scheduled to open March 19, 2017.)

This roadside station is on National Route 42 approximately five minutes by car from JR Tsubaki Station. Shirahama Town's Tsubaki area is famous for its natural hot springs that are said to be great for the skin. While it has the regular roadside station services like tourist information and special products, it also has a footbath and a public bath where you can enjoy their free-flowing hot spring water. Their family bath is a nice way to have a soak together. Buying a book of entry tickets will provide you a discount on each bath. They have a vending machine where you can purchase hot spring hot water too. Their eatery serves such regular dishes as set meals and rice bowls.

Extending out for about two kilometers, Sandanbeki features 50-meter tall large rock walls comprised of columnar joints and is a Place of Scenic Beauty for its precipitous cliffs. On top of the cliffs is a viewing platform which allows visitors to gaze out at the scenery of the magnificent Pacific Ocean. Also close to the viewing platform is a cave that, according to legend, is where Kumano pirates (and later Kumano navy members) hid their boats during the Genji and Heike battle. Inside the cave is Japan’s largest bronze statue of the goddess Benzaiten, and it is possible to ride an elevator down into the cave from the top of the cliffs.

    Wakayama Pref. Nishimurogunshirahamachou
Facing the ocean from the tip of Setozaki Cape, Senjojiki is a vast bedrock formation that looks as though countless tatami mats were spread out along the shore. The formation is composed of soft white sandstone, and the magnificent scenery formed by waves hitting the shore over many years is truly overwhelming. This is also a popular spot to watch the sunset.

"Located next to Shirahama Town's Sakata Park, the museum and shrine here share the same premises. The art museum displays 150 pieces on Lamaism, Hinduism, and Esoteric Japanese Buddhism; including Buddhist statuary normally not open to view (Photography is prohibited in the hall). Right as you leave the art museum, you'll find Kanki Shrine (Sakata Shrine). Known for the boons of marital happiness, pregnancy and smooth delivery, and match making, its home to the stones of the Mt. Sakata Ritual Site used more than 1,300 years ago. What's more, as Prince Arima once visited Shirahama Onsen, they offer a photo service called the “Asuka Romance Experience"" where you can get your picture taken wearing Asuka period clothing."

  • Wave ripple marks of Shirahama
    Travel / Tourism
    Wakayama Nishimuro-gun Shirahamacho
"20 minutes from the Nanki-Shirahama Interchange on the Kisei Expressway via Prefectural Route 34. These fossil wave ripple marks can be seen along the coast from Ezura Beach to Sakata in Shirahama Town. The marks were formed by the action of waves on sand on what was once the sea floor, which then became coated with a clay-like material that later fossilized, preserving them for eternity. The marks are called ""fossive wave"" and believed to have been formed in the Tertiary Period of the Cenozoic Era some 15 million years ago, and today they have been designated a National Natural Monument."
