This museum was founded in August 1971 for the purpose of displaying and preserving this special historic site, the Iwase-senzuka burial mounds. Over 430 burial mounds dot the vast 65ha grounds, as well as the former estate of the important cultural property, the Taniyama Estate and other cultural property residences. Here one can study the various cultures and lifestyles of historic periods through the archive museum centering on archeology/folklore material exhibition (charged), restored pit dwellings, and the Manyo botanical garden that cultivates plants specifically mentioned in the Manyoshu, the 8th century anthology of Japanese poetry.

This museum facility is operated by the prefectural government. The museum preserves and displays folk cultural items and artefacts excavated from ancient kofun tombs, particular the tombs of the Special Historic Site-designated Iwase Senzuka Ancient Tombs. The exterior of the museum is dressed with crystalline schist, the same stone used to build the tombs in the area. In the museum's standing exhibition, you can view excavated artefacts and explore the history of Wakayama Prefecture and from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The museum's vast grounds are dotted with the tombs of the Iwase Senzuka Ancient Tombs group, and there are walking courses connecting various sites as well as a reconstructed pit dwelling and Important Cultural Property-designated Edo period settlement - visitors can even look inside these buildings and some of the tombs!
