  • Chokyutei Garden
    Travel / Tourism
    Wakayama Kainan-shi Fujishiro 758-45
This mansion is located about a three-minute drive from the Kainan Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway. Located on the grounds of the brewing and distilling company Nakano BC, the residence is famous for its expansive Japanese garden. Its name is taken from the company's Chokyu brand of Japanese sake. Visitors can enjoy seeing the beautiful seasonal scenery from the nearly 200 square-meter reception hall, which is open to the public. Swans with names associated with sake can even be seen gracefully swimming in the massive 3000 square-meter ornamental pond.
  • Shishigase-toge Pass Stone-paved Path
    Travel / Tourism
    Wakayama Hidaka-gun Hidakacho Haradani
"A 15-minute drive from JR Kii-Uchihara Station. This stone-paved path goes through Shishigase Pass 4.1 kilometers away from the Iseki bus stop. One of many stone-paved paths created as part of the various ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, it is 503 meters long, making it the longest still in existence. Also designated a Historic Site by Hidakagawa Town, the area around the pass happens to be a border between surrounding municipalities. The historically important path is mentioned in the ancient ""Taiheki"" and ""Genpei Josuki"" historical epics, and those walking it can view historic sites such as the ruins of a mountain castle along its length and imagine what the area looked like in the distant past."
  • Nishi-no-Maru Teien Garden (Valley of Autumn Leaves)
    Travel / Tourism
    Wakayama Wakayama-shi Ichibancho 3
This garden is located on the grounds of Wakayama Castle Park. A traditional strolling garden, it is designed to make maximum use of its scenic location on a slope at the base of Mt. Torafusu and has a pond and waterfall supplied by a spring. The garden is considered one of the finest of the feudal lord gardens dating to the early Edo period. Also known as the Momijidani Teien (garden of the valley of Autumn foliage), as this nickname implies, the garden experiences stunning fall foliage, and in most years visitors can take in the sight of vivid gold and crimson leaves reflecting off the surface of the garden's pond from late November to early December. Points of interest include the Engyokaku pavilion standing on the bank of the pond; and the Ofunaishi, a boat-shaped stone in the pond's center. Visitors can also stop by the Koshoan tearoom to enjoy a cup of matcha green tea while taking in a view of the garden.
  • Awashima Kaido Road
    Travel / Tourism
    Wakayama Wakayama-shi Kada
"This shrine road extends from the old stone Kada guidepost to Awashima Shrine. The guidepost marking the start of the road stands beside the three-forked road junction a short walk from Kada Station in the direction of Kada Port; the characters on the guidepost state, ""Right: road to Wakayama; left: road to Awashima."" The narrow lane extending away from this point to the west was once a road used to travel to Awaji Island, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Today, many traces of this era still remain, including the former Kada Police Station (now a private residence), covered with white-painted wooden siding and a traditional kawara tile roof; Kadakasuga Shrine; and other old structures; and visitors can walk the road and imagine what the area looked like when it was a busy traffic hub."
  • Furo-bashi Bridge
    Travel / Tourism
    Wakayama Wakayama-shi Wakauranaka 3
Located right next to the Furobashi bus stop a 30-minute bus ride from JR Wakayama Station. This stone arch bridge is situated across from Tsushima Shrine and has been designated an Important Cultural Property by Wakayama City. Built in 1851 by Tokugawa Harutomi, lord of Kishu Domain, it was built for the Tokugawa clan when visiting Kishu Toshogu Shrine. In the Edo period, stone arch bridges outside of the Kyushu region were extremely rare; of particular note is the exquisite cloud pattern relief on the railing believed to have been crafted by stonemasons from Yuasa Town.
