Wakayama Higashimuro-gun Kushimotocho Arida 1157 Kushimoto Underwater Park

This observatory is located approximately a 20-minute drive from Susami-minami Interchange. It is situated inside Kushimoto Underwater Park, and there is a free shuttle bus that runs from the JR Kushimoto Station. As the name suggests, visitors can use the observatory to look underwater from above ground. The coastal area of Kushimoto is known as the world's northernmost coral colony registered in the Ramsar Convention. In addition to the table corals, there are also around 270 species of fish, including schools of Largescale Blackfish, which can be observed here. Depending on the temperature of the water, anywhere from 20 to 70 species of fish can be seen at a time. The facility is open all year round, and business hours are extended during long holidays.

Wakayama Wakayama-shi Saikazaki

This place of scenic beauty is located in Bandoko no Hana, Saikazaki, Wakayama City. The garden, which is located on flat ground that protrudes into the ocean, was once the site of a watchtower used by the Kishu Domain to watch for approaching ships. Notable for its beautiful coastline formed by rare Kishu bluestone, the garden has also been selected as one of 50 places of scenic beauty in the Setonaikai National Park Special Zone. Visitors can view the seasonal flowers and also enjoy activities such as fishing from the shore, swimming at the attached private beach, barbecuing (reservation required). The garden also hosts weddings and other events and has even been used as a filming location for dramas.

Koya-Ryujin Skyline Road

One of the preeminent skyline parkways in the Kii Peninsula, this mountain road runs from the sacred Mt. Koyasan to via Mt. Gomadan to Ryujin Hot Spring. The tolls for this parkway were lifted in October 2003, allowing the beauty of the vibrant yellows and reds of the beech and mountain sumac trees to be enjoyed by all while overlooking the contiguous peaks of Kii. Famous as one of the best areas for cruising, this parkway is as one of the top 100 scenic roads in Japan. Although the roads are clear throughout the year, during the icy months of mid-December through the end of March, motorcycle passage is regulated.
Daimon-zaka (Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route)

"This famous slope is part of the Kumano Kodo, one of Japan's three great pilgrimage routes. There used to be a checkpoint with a large gate near the start of the slope where the authorities collected a toll for passing, which is where Daimon-zaka got its name. Located after the remains of the Shingu clan's checkpoint, it has a mystical atmosphere with rows of old cedar trees and mossy cobblestone paving. Two enormous trees called the ""Married Cedars"" thought to be about 800 years old are on either side of the path just as you start walking on the slope. Daimonzaka Tea House rents Heian Period (794–1185) outfits that you can try on for a commemorative photograph or even wear to visit one of the local shrines."

Wakayama Iwade-shi Negoro 2286

This garden is located on the grounds of Negoroji Temple about a two-minute drive from the Iwade-Negoro Interchange on the Keinawa Expressway. The Chisen-shiki Horai Teien faces the Nagusa Goten, a building bestowed to the temple by the Kishu Tokugawa family, and also features a natural waterfall and pond. The Karesansui Teien is a Japanese rock garden featuring a pond. The Shoten-ike pond, meanwhile, is thought to have been built during the Heian period, the same era during which Negoroji Temple was founded. All three have been designated as national places of scenic beauty. The Daito pagoda that conspicuously stands 40 meters above the temple's grounds has been designated as a national treasure.

Saishogamine Scenic Lookout

Saishogamine Peak, 285 meters high, on Mount Yuri is well known for having been a battle field in the Nambokucho period (1336–1392). It is the site of a wonderful scenic lookout, offering one of the best nighttime views in Wakayama Prefecture. The view is especially panoramic, taking in the Kinokawa Plain and Togenkyo, and on clear days, it is even possible to see as a far as Awaji Island. Plenty of parking is available, so it is an easy spot to visit. There are fine stands of cherry and peach trees, making Saishogamine an excellent but little-known place for viewing blossoms.
Kiihino Misaki Lighthouse

This white lighthouse stands on Hinomisaki in Hidaka-gun, Wakayama Prefecture. At 128 meters high, it is one of the tallest lighthouses in Wakayama Prefecture. The area around the lighthouse is known as a scenic spot for beautiful sunsets, and on clear days, Shikoku and Awaji Island can be seen. The lighthouse is open to the public on the third Sunday of every month from 2:00 p.m. for about three hours.

This rest stop is located along the Koya-Ryujin Skyline at an altitude of 1040 meters. The rest stop features a garden planted with more than 3,500 hydrangeas and a photogenic background of coniferous trees and mountain ranges. The best time to view the hydrangeas is from mid-July to early August, which is later than in the lowlands. The rest stop has much to offer in terms of seasonal scenery including the one thousand rhododendrons that bloom in the spring and the red fall foliage. Fall visitors can also see one of the Top 100 Sunsets of Wakayama Prefecture. The rest stop's restaurant serves characteristic local dishes such as seasonal wild plants, amago-meshi (rice cooked with red-spotted masu trout), and matsutake mushroom dishes, a seasonal exclusive. The rest stop also sells local specialties such as Japanese umbrella-pine and yakiyogomi (toasted mugwort dumplings).

Wakayama Shingu-shi Funamachi 1-2-1

This atmospheric townscape adjacent to the Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine is located a 15-minute walk from JR Shingu Station. From the Edo period to Showa period the neighborhood bristled with hundreds of temporary restaurants, blacksmiths, inns, and other businesses called kawaraya that served visitors to the riverbed of the Kumano River. This recreation of a row of kawaraya has a number of shops offering souvenirs, drinks, snacks, and more. It also hosts a variety of events every weekend and holiday. One of these is the Kumano Mandala Etoki, in which local storytellers use picture scrolls to explain subjects such as the history and legends of Shingu.

Kashinozaki Lighthouse

Standing atop the Kashino cliffs, this is Japan’s oldest lighthouse with a still working light. When ships from all over the world began visiting Japan after the country’s borders opened, this lighthouse was constructed according to a design by British engineer Richard Henry Brunton. The daffodils that bloom profusely on the premises are said to have been planted by the British engineers to remind them of their hometown.

"This temple approach is located in Koyasan, Koya Town, Ito County. This is the road used by female worshipers to visit Mt. Koya, which was off-limits to women until 1872. It is said that women would go around the mountain in order to visit and pay their respects at the mausoleum of the Buddhist monk Kukai following the women-only halls called Nyonindo. The road is one of the components of the ""Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range"" UNESCO World Heritage Site."
Shirahama Midsea Observation Tower (Princess Coral)

This all-weather observatory is about 100 meters off the coast from Hotel Seamore and about 20 minutes by car from Shirahama Station. About 18 meters high and stretching 8 meters under water, you can observe about 30 kinds of fish including black porgies and largescale blackfish from its 12 windows. The air bubbles rising from the sea bed are said to be where a hot spring comes to the surface. A picture panel of the fish you'll see will help you identify them. The observation tower has a pleasant breeze and a great view that looks out to the vast stretch of the horizon.
Fujishiro-zaka slope

This sloping trail is along the Ancient Kumano Kodo Route as one descends southwardly from the Fujishiro-jinja Shrine. It received the designation as a National Cultural Property in 2015, and in 2017 it became part of the Japan Heritage, the Treasure House of Scenic Beauty: Wakanoura. This spot is famous as the execution site of Prince Arima, who being the son of Emperor Kotoku, was misled into a revolt during the battles surrounding the successor of the Imperial Throne. To this day, at the entrance of the trail are the tombstone and the monument engraved with the waka song during the procession to his death.
Kanayama Observatory

An observatory situated on Mt. Kana on the northern side of the island of Kii Oshima. Positioned 90 meters above sea level, the observatory offers a sweeping view of Kushimoto Town, Cape Shionomisaki, and, above all, the picturesque Hashiguiiwa Rocks on the opposite shore. On clear days, visitors can even see all the way to Mt. Nachi and Oshima Port. The roughly one-kilometer long trail leading from the base of the mountain to the observatory has no steep inclines; meanwhile, subtropical vegetation grows lushly along the trail. The observatory has benches and is a popular destination for those looking to enjoy a little mountain hiking.

"You don't need reservations for this astronomical observatory in Kimino Town with its 105-centimeter telescope, the largest in Wakayama Prefecture. Away from the lights of the city, on moonless nights you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Their “Starry Sky Tour"" where the resident staff will point out the constellations is popular, too. The observatory is located on the summit of Matsugamine at about 400 meters above sea level. Beautiful sunset which changes its color with lapse of time and can be viewed from the observation deck has been chosen as one of the 100 best places for the sunrise and sunset in Wakayama Prefecture."
Gobyo-bashi Bridge

This bridge is the final bridge along the way to which to the inner Okunoin sanctum after crossing the Ichino bridge and the Nakano bridge. In the Tamagawa River flowing from the sacred Mt. Yoryu, behind the Okunoin sanctum, is erected a stupa to quell the spirits of any who have perished due to a water disaster. This is also the site of the tradition where the skewered and grilled fish for Kobo Daishi was released it was resuscitated. Once you are across the bridge one enters the sacred area enshrined to Kobo Daishi, for which it is important to enter after straightening one’s attire for worship. It is said that the 36 slats in the bridge together with the bridge itself represent the 37 deities of the Diamond Realm.

Wakayama Kainan-shi Kuroe

"The Kuroe District of western Wakayama Prefecture's Kainan City in developed as a producer of Kuroe lacquerware starting in the Muromachi period. The roughly 230 meter-long Kawabata Street leading to Kotonoura Onzan Soen is lined with historic buildings including the old workshop-homes of lacquerware artisans as well as wholesaler shops. The neighborhood is notable for a sawtooth layout created by all the buildings being aligned to the street at the same angle. On the first weekend of each November the district holds the Kishu Lacquerware Festival, which celebrates Kishu lacquerware and the Kuroe district. Every August 14th the district hosts a night market called the Getaichi, meaning ""clog market,"" a tradition that has continued for more than a century."
