    This gorge, located at the upper end of Aizu River that runs through the center of Tanabe City is dotted with magnificent and unusually shaped boulders. It is well loved for its beautiful foliage in the autumn, and its fresh green foliage in the spring. The famous Waterfall of Akagi, (where the Fudo deity is enshrined), and the cliffs far above the falls where Magai Buddha is engraved is a sight to see.

  • Dorokyo Gorge

    This massive gorge straddling the borders of Nara Prefecture, Mie Prefecture, and Wakayama Prefecture in Yoshino-Kumano National Park has been designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The gorge is divided into two parts, Kamidoro and Shimodoro, at the upstream of the Kitayama River. The downmost part of Shimodoro, also known as Dorohaccho, has a particular majestic beauty thanks to the boulders and unusual rock formations that line it. The two-hour jet boat cruises (round-trip) are an especially popular attraction. Passengers can enjoy the deep and mystical cobalt blue water , its rugged sheer cliffs, and its magnificent boulders.

  • Tamagawa-kyo Gorge

    "This gorge is located upstream on the Nyu River at the foot of Mt. Koya. It is a scenic spot where there are a series of spectacular rock formations called the ""48 rocks of Tamagawa"" including such as Kameiwa (turtle rock) and Sarutobiiwa (flying monkey rock), as well as waterfalls such as Goko Falls and Shiraito Falls. The area is covered with forests and you can enjoy the scenery throughout the four seasons. It is popular for its hiking course and as a campsite with cherry blossoms and fresh greenery in the spring, dipping in and fishing in the clear streams where there are sweetfish and fireflies in the summer, and the colorful autumn leaves of trees such as maple and Japanese sumac in the autumn. A fishing ticket is required when fishing for sweetfish or dwarf rill trout."

    Along three kilometers of this valley, there are many nature spots to visit. Out of the 20 Scenic Sites in Kii, Hyakkenzan-keikoku Valley has been voted the No. 1 favorite sight to see. In additional to the various large and small waterfalls, there is a natural tunnel formation in the original growth forest. It is a nature location that one never tires of visiting. There are 2 hiking courses, suited to your stamina level, affording one a choice. In May, Koinobori carp windsocks are flow across valley, along with a fishing tournament and many other events.

    This place is located approximately a 30-minute drive from the JR Koza Station. It is situated in a stream that is a tributary of Koza River, and the ground, pocked with holes of varying sizes extends for around 200 meters. The holes were formed by flowing water and small stones, and there is a waterfall in the middle. Although it is not a very high waterfall, the water glides along the sharp edges of the rocks, giving it power and momentum. A few patterns of the Takinohaitarou folktale remain, and every year in July, Bouzuhaze goby and Yoshinobori goby fish can be seen swimming up the rocks. The basin of the waterfall is a popular spot for fishermen who are looking to catch sweetfish.
