A Japanese sweet shop located in the Koyasan area in Koya Town, Ito County, Wakayama Prefecture. The shop is famous for its grilled rice cakes, a favorite treat for visitors to Koyasan to eat, as well as the Miroku-ishi, a renowned sweet named after the stone of the same name found on the grounds of the Okunoin Temple. The shop’s hijiri yokan jelly is made according to an ancient treasured written recipe; this historic culinary gem was once an essential part of local Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. The shop’s display shelves are also filled with a variety of other sweets popular among visitors to the area, including monaka bean jam filled wafers and senbei rice crackers branded with the local mascot character Koya-kun.

You can choose between several sweets; the price is correct (you spend almost 110/150 yen each one) and there is a beautiful space where you can eat them. NB:you can freely drink water, hot tea or...

This yokan (sweet bean jelly) specialty shop is in Kushimoto Town, Higashimuro County, Wakayama Prefecture. It opened in 1900 and operated over four generations before closing down once. The current owner used recipes he found in his grandfather’s Buddhist altar to recreate the original taste. The shop’s flagship product is the “hon-neri yokan,” of which only 200 can be produced daily. Each one is carefully made using Hokkaido azuki beans and agar from Osaka. The shop was recently awarded first place at the Monde Selection competition. The surface is crispy and has a unique dry texture.

This historic Japanese sweet shop was founded in Osaka in 1624. It's approximately five minutes on foot from Daimonzaka's Married Cedars on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. In the quest for the best water for making their sweets, they opened this store in Katsuura to use spring water from Mt. Nachi. Visitors can observe their facility's crafting process with its dedication to flavor and safety. They use Okinawa made sugar for an array of items like ice cream, karinto manju treats, and their original kuro-ame sweets that are meant to be reminiscent of Kishu binchotan charcoal. Meals that feature local marine produce like their raw tuna-topped rice bowls are available too.

Located in the center of Tanabe, a city along the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route, about a 15-minute drive from the Nanki Tanabe Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway via National Route 42, this is a venerable retailer of traditional Japanese sweets. Its flagship product is Okeshi Mochi, a simple round, flat cake of rice paste covered on both sides with sweet red bean paste. The soft, chewiness of the pounded Mochi cake and the perfectly salted, not-too-sweet flavor of the bean paste make this a popular item, and it is said to have been a favorite of Minakata Kumagusu, the famous 19th-century scholar in natural history and folklore studies. Since these confections do not keep more than a day, one can taste them only here. In the back of the shop is a tea corner, where customers can enjoy a cup of tea with their sweets.

This Japanese confectionery store is located down the road from the entrance of Tomyo-ji Temple, in a residential area of Taiji Town. Their specialty is Tetsumen-mochi. About the origin of this famous rice cake, itis said that a monk once visited this place looking for an inn, while on the pilgrimage to Kumano. He could not find the inn, but an old man of the town, called Kamehachi, let the monk stay at his home, and by way of thanks, the monk taught the old man how to make the special mochi (rice cake). The name of the Tetsumen-mochi is derived from the name the monk gave when asked who he was. It is made by wrapping Azuki beans from Tokachi in a layer of rice flour. It is also sold as a set, and is recommended for souvenirs and gifts.
