This modern art museum was built on the Wakayama Castle site and features a refined, contemporary design. The collections and exhibitions focus on fine art from the Meiji period to present times. In addition to works by Wakayama artists, there are over 10,000 items in total, including 13 oil paintings by Yuzo Saeki and works by Picasso, woodblock prints by Munch, and more. There are planned exhibitions and collection items on display, as well as temporary exhibitions.

Very nice museum and great exhibition. Interesting beautiful modern building and nice exhibition inside. They have a restaurant too, but nothing was in English at the menu outside, so I skip it.

"You can reach this museum by taking the Ryujin Bus bound for Hongu Taisha-Mae and getting off at the Nakahechi Bijutsukan stop. It mainly displays the work of two painters from Wakayama Prefecture's Tanabe City: Banka Nonagase, who formed Hakuensha and contributed greatly to the local arts, and Ryoun Watase, the Deputy Administrative Director and juror at Nihon Nangain who went on to receive the Wakayama Prefecture Distinguished Cultural Service Prize. The museum itself was the first work of the internationally active architectural team “Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA."""

"Located next to Shirahama Town's Sakata Park, the museum and shrine here share the same premises. The art museum displays 150 pieces on Lamaism, Hinduism, and Esoteric Japanese Buddhism; including Buddhist statuary normally not open to view (Photography is prohibited in the hall). Right as you leave the art museum, you'll find Kanki Shrine (Sakata Shrine). Known for the boons of marital happiness, pregnancy and smooth delivery, and match making, its home to the stones of the Mt. Sakata Ritual Site used more than 1,300 years ago. What's more, as Prince Arima once visited Shirahama Onsen, they offer a photo service called the “Asuka Romance Experience"" where you can get your picture taken wearing Asuka period clothing."

"Visitors can find this museum by following National Route 371 north along the Hidakagawa River from the hot spring resort area of Ryujin Village, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. As its name indicates, it houses over 100 mandalas. Some date back 1200 years, to the era when the Shingon monk Kobo Daishi founded the first monastery on Mt. Koya. There is a special exhibit in his honor called ""The Light of Kobo Daishi Kukai."" In addition to mandalas, the museum also exhibits haiku, poems, and other items connected with Buddhism."

    2016年6月23日にみなべから高野山に向かう途中に立ち寄りました。トリップアドバイザーに施設の写真が掲載されていないことから行きましたが、曼陀羅の説明がないので、ただ見ただけという感じでした。

Although said to be the smallest art museum in Japan their collection includes a number of early-modern works by artists such as Maruyama Okyo and his student Nagasawa Rosetsu as well as Kano Tanyu and Hakuin. 55 of their room partition paintings including Maruyama Okyo’s “Hajougunsenzu” and Nagasawa Rosetsu’s “Ryukozu” have been designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
