Nara Ikoma-gun Ikarugacho Horyuji Kita 1-1-2
"This Buddhist temple is affiliated with Prince Shotoku and is also the oldest Buddhist convent in Japan. Today, the temple adjoins the Horyuji's Eastern Precinct, but it is said to have originally been built opposite the Horyuji to the west with Prince Shotoku's Ikaruganomiya palace in between. Particularly worthy of seeing is the temple's wooden statue depicting a bodhisattva in the half-lotus position. One of only a very few such statues making use of the so-called ""archaic smile,"" some count it alongside the Sphinx and the Mona Lisa as one of the three great smiling artworks of the world. A replica of the Tenjukoku Shucho Mandala, the oldest work of embroidery art in Japan and a designated National Treasure, is enshrined in the main temple building."

This old temple is adjacent to Horyuji’s Yumedono, and you you hold the ticket for Horyuji, you can get a discount for admission. In this temple, there is a famous Miroku Buddha, which is designated...

This is a temple inside Horyuji-Sannai, Ikaruga Town. It was established in 607 by Prince Shotoku and Empress Suiko, and the current temple building is celebrated as one of the world's oldest wooden structures and Japan's first World Heritage Site. Inside the grounds are 55 pieces of architecture designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, and in the Daihozoin (Great Treasure Hall) are stored a great many important treasures from the Asuka period.

Taimadera Temple boasts a 1,400-year history. Maroko Shinno, the younger brother of Prince Shotoku, founded it in 612 during the reign of Emperor Suiko. It is said that it was dismantled, moved from Kawachi to the Taima area, and rebuilt during the Asuka Period (538–710). Among the long-standing objects of deep veneration are a National Treasure, the Taima Mandala, on which Chujo Hime (Hojo), the daughter of Fujiwara no Toyonari, is said to have embroidered an image of the Pure Land of Paradise with thread made from lotus fibers after receiving the blessing of the bodhisattva Kannon, along with an image of “Kannon the Guide,” Chujo Hime’s guardian deity. It is a famous site for viewing flowers, especially peonies.

This old Shingon sect Buddhist temple, known as the sixth temple on the Saigoku Thirty-three Kannon Temples Pilgrimage, is said to have been built in 703. The eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon (Bodhisattva or Goddess of Mercy) enshrined there as the honzon (principal object of worship) has a miraculous effect on eye disease, and attracts a great many worshippers from across the country. The three-storied pagoda and Reido have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties.

This shrine was said to have been established nearly 2,100 years ago during the reign of Emperor Sujin, Japan's 10th emperor. It enshrines the Shinto gods Ame no Mihashira and Kuni no Mihashira. These tutelary deities of the air control everything between heaven and earth, namely the atmosphere, the breath of life, and the wind. The shrine's annual events, such as the Daidonto Festival and Setsubun (the ceremonial beginning of spring) are very popular.

A Buddhist temple located in Mii, Ikaruga Town. Founded in the Asuka period, the temple is said to have been erected by Prince Yamashiro no oe, son of Prince Shotoku. No structures from the time of the temple’s foundings remain today. The temple’s three-tier pagoda, designated a National Treasure in the Meiji period, burned down after a lightning strike in 1944; it was rebuilt in 1975. The temple houses numerous precious Buddhist statues designated as Important Cultural Properties, including an Asuka period seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Healing Buddha),

A shrine in Kawai, Kawai Town, Kitakatsuragi County. Located at the confluence of all of the rivers of the Nara Basin, it enshrines the deity Wakaukanome-no-Mikoto, who controls large harvests and water. On February 11th they hold the unusual Sunakake Festival in which sand is flung about like rain over the observers.

One of the main three Inari deity shrines of Japan, this shrine is the protective shrine of Mt. Kori, enshrining Hidenaga, the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The legend behind the name of the shrine, Genkuro, recounts that when Minamoto-no Yoshitsune fought with his older brother, Yoritomo, he was helped by the Inari god many times. In the main sanctum the white fox deity, Byakko Genkuro is enshrined. Where other shrines have guard dogs, this shrine is protected by guard foxes at its entryway. Endeared deeply by the locals, this shrine hosts many seasonal events.

This venerable sub-temple, the oldest in the Mt. Shigi area, was founded in the late Heian period. The temple's Gomado (Homa ritual hall), built by the famed Buddhist priest Myoren Shonin, is where the temple conducts its bishamon goma (Vaisravana homa) prayer rituals. Its Zenigamedo (Baby Turtle Hall) enshrines Zenigame Zenshin, a deity said to grant luck with money and other matters. This is a temple constructed by Prince Shotoku in the latter half of the fifth century, which stands at an elevation of 437 meters halfway up Mt. Shigi. There is a legend that Mt. Shigi originated when, on the hour of Tiger (around 4:00 a.m.) of the day of Tiger of the year of Tiger, the deity Bishamonten (guardian god of Buddhism) appeared and gave the prince the divine protection , thanks to the Bishamonten the Prince enshrined it. So the temple took the tiger as its guardian deity and is decorated here and there with papier tigers. In cherry blossom season over 2,000 stone lanterns light up the cherry trees at night, and in the autumn the whole mountain is colored with close to 1,000 trees changing their leaves.

You’ll find this temple of the Pure Land sect about a 15-minute walk from Nijojinjaguchi Station. The excavation of Japan’s oldest stone image of the Buddha in 1991 made headlines. It is said that during the reign of Emperor Tenji (626-671), a large stone emitting a mysterious light was found, and the emperor ordered a temple hall to be built as a result. En no Gyoja is the founder. It is also the temple associated with Princess Chujo, said to be the daughter of Fujiwara no Toyonari, who served as the subject of many dramas. It is called “Somedera” (Dye Temple) due to the “dyeing well” used for the lotus threads and the “thread-hanging cherry tree” used in the creation of the Hasuito Mandala. In addition, it is famous for seasonal blooms, such as peonies, Chinese peonies, hydrangeas, cherry trees, crape flowers, and more.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
