  • Nunome Dam

    This new dam is the fourth to be built along Kiso River. Yagyu Village, which features a number of historical sites regarding the Yagyu Clan, is located nearby. The dam's operators, who put great importance on connections with the local community, organize tours for school children, fishing competitions in Nunome Lake, and running races. The lake is also a great place for white crucian carp fishing.
  • Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest

    This primeval forest in eastern Nara City covers more than 250 hectares. This protected religious site has long been considered as a sacred mountain by Kasuga Shrine. The forest is now home to diverse flora and fauna. A nine- kilometer-long nature trail, the Kasugayama Mountain Trail, makes the forest a great place to enjoy forest bathing, bird watching, and more.

    Nara Nara-shi Zoshicho 406-1 Todaiji
    This bell tower is located on the grounds of the Todaiji temple in Zoshi-cho, Nara City. The belfry was rebuilt in the Kamakura period by the priest Eisai. The bonsho bell which hangs within it was cast in 752 and it and the belfry have been designated a National Treasure. When the bell is rung 108 times as is tradition in Japan on New Year's Eve, regular people, in groups of eight, get to ring the bell once on a first-come, first-served basis, with ultimately more than 800 people getting to ring the bell.

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
