Nara Pref. Udashi Oudahongou

The Matabei Cherry Trees are “weeping” cherry trees, located in the city of Uda and said to be 300 years old. According to legend, Goto Matabei, a military commander in the Warring States period, came to live here, and since the trees are near the ruins of his manor house, the trees are referred to as “Matabei Cherry Trees.” They produce beautiful blossoms in early April, attracting tens of thousands of cherry blossom enthusiasts each year.

大野寺、仏隆寺、と並ぶ宇陀の三大桜。大坂夏の陣で活躍した戦国武将後藤又兵衛の屋敷跡にあると伝わることから、「又兵衛桜」と地元では親しまれています。元々は屋敷跡からの樹齢300年の瀧桜(しだれ桜)1本だけでした。近年、周囲に桜が植えられ公園のようになっています。駐車場料金(500円)が要ります。

Nara Kitakatsuragi-gun

A park sitting astride Koryo-cho and Kawai-cho, Kitakatsuragi County. The park is dotted with ancient burial mounds and equipped with large fields, large play areas, a botanical garden, and a cafe. A variety of flowers bloom throughout the seasons including plum trees, roses, and azaleas, and in April they hold the Umami Tulip Fair.

Tsukigase Plum Ravine

Tsukigase Plum Ravine is a forest of plum trees that extends along the Satsuki River (part of Nabari River) ravine. One of the three largest plum forests in Nara Prefecture, it is well known as a site for viewing blossoms. About 10,000 plum trees grow there, and during blossom season, the entire forest is a riot of red and white flowering trees. The Tsukigase Plum Ravine Festival, held during blossom season, attracts large numbers of tourists.
Ano Plum Grove

Ano Plum Grove, which boasts 20,000 plum trees, is in bloom from late February to late March, with plum blossoms covering the hillsides. This grove has a long history and was even the topic of a poem written 700 years ago during the Nanboku-cho period. In 1877, cultivation of the plum trees for their fruit began. Then in 1923, in commemoration of the marriage of the Crown Prince (later the Emperor Showa), 5,000 more plum trees were planted, and the number of plum trees has continued to increase since then.

Odaigahara is one of the rainiest places in the world, with an average rainfall of 5000 millimeters. This rainfall has made this exemplary virgin forest a precious paradise for flora and fauna. The area is divided into two areas; East Odai, which contains a number of major scenic spots such as Mt. Hidegatake and Orochigura, and West Odai, which is covered by the virgin forest of Odaigahara. Entering West Odai requires filing for a permit.

Nara Ikoma-gun Ikarugacho Inabakurumase 2

This first-class river flows through Ikoma City, Heguri Town, and Ikaruga Town, joining with the Yamato River. A picturesque destination mentioned in poetry since ancient times, Ariwara no Narihira and Noin's poems about the river are particularly famous. The river is also a famous place to view fall foliage in autumn. From late November to early December each year, the river's banks are adorned with the spectacular colors of Japanese maples, mountain maples, and trident maples.

地元斑鳩町の由来の鳥であるイカルが、１１月から４月ごろにこの辺りに現れるとの事。滞在した際には、見る事が出来ませんでした。川が綺麗で、遊歩道沿いを４０分程散歩してベンチでお弁当を食べました。雰囲気のある遊歩道です。

A plum orchard in Hirohashi, Shimoichi Town, Yoshino County. It's said to be one of Nara's three major plum groves alongside Tsukigase Plum Grove and Anou Plum Grove. The orchard contains nearly 5,000 plum trees which bloom from late February to late March. It The Plum Satoyama Festival is held including events such as a stamp rally (stamp collecting orienteering) and an open-air market.

A tributary of the Yamato River that runs from Nara City to Yamatokoriyama City. The section in Nara City is well known for being a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing with cherry trees running for numerous kilometers down the bank. It's also the site for events including the Saho River Sakura Festival Lamplight Gathering and the Saho River Kawaji Sakura Festival.
Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest

This primeval forest in eastern Nara City covers more than 250 hectares. This protected religious site has long been considered as a sacred mountain by Kasuga Shrine. The forest is now home to diverse flora and fauna. A nine- kilometer-long nature trail, the Kasugayama Mountain Trail, makes the forest a great place to enjoy forest bathing, bird watching, and more.
Nunome Dam

This new dam is the fourth to be built along Kiso River. Yagyu Village, which features a number of historical sites regarding the Yagyu Clan, is located nearby. The dam's operators, who put great importance on connections with the local community, organize tours for school children, fishing competitions in Nunome Lake, and running races. The lake is also a great place for white crucian carp fishing.

Asuka Historical National Government Park is a 60 hectare park created to protect and share the natural beauty and Asuka cultural assets found in the area. The park is divided into five areas; the Amakashi-no-Oka area is a hill offering a sweeping view extending from Mt. Kongo to the Yamato Sanzan mountains and the sites of Asuka-kyo and Fujiwara-kyo. Visitors can also immerse themselves in the ancient culture of the region; the area is outfitted with a trail on which you can enjoy a quiz on the names of 40 plants which appear in the ancient text of the Man'yoshu and the Kojiki.

This watering hole is selected as one of the Select Best Waters of Japan by the Ministry of the Environment, and one of the top 34 wellsprings by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Visitors can freely scoop as much water as they wish using their own container. These waters are natural spring waters flowing from the karst near the Godaimatsu limestone cavern. The sound of the water flowing through the cavern reverberates here, sounding like tumbling rocks, and hence the name goro-goro. Not only is the calcium and mineral rich water healthy to drink, but is said to enhance the flavor of teas and coffee. On weekends visitors are snaked around in a line to collect some of this famous water.

This 350 year-old cedar in Yagyushimocho, Nara City is said to have been planted by the famous swordsman Yagyu Jubei (Mitsuyoshi) before leaving on a journey across Japan. Despite being killed by two lightning strikes in 1973, the tree still remains standing.
Moto-yakushiji Temple Ruins

The Moto-yakushiji Temple Ruins are the original site of Yakushiji Temple, which was originally built in the year 680 but would later be relocated to its current location. While today only a small shrine remains standing, the former site of the front garden still contains the cornerstone of the main temple structure, the mounds and foundation stones of both the East Pagoda and West Pagoda. One of its highlights is the common water hyacinths that bloom between mid-august to late September. During peak seasons the site is carpeted with nearly 400,000 of the beautiful purple flowers.
Shirakawa Dam

Shirakawa Dam was constructed for flood control of the Takase River and Naragawa River basin and for irrigation of a 550-ha agricultural area. Reels and lures are prohibited, but Japanese crucian carp fishing is allowed from sunrise until 17:00 year-round. The area around the dam is a park with multipurpose sports fields and a gateball field.

"The Tsubosaka-dera Temple stands on the mountain Tsubosaka, which boasts a sweeping view to the south of Mt. Yoshino, a famous cherry blossom viewing destination; and, to the north, the Nara Basin and the three mountains of the Yamato Sanzan, land of the ancient ""Man'yoshu"" poetry anthology. On the northeast side of the temple's main temple building, which is also dubbed the Okunoin, there are numerous carved stone Buddhist statues decorating the bare slope of Mt. Koko. The statues are known as the 500 Arhats, but the area is also dotted with depictions of 25 bodhisattvas, the Gosha Myojin, and the Mandala of the Two Realms."
Inabuchi-Kayanomori Village

This village is located along the Asuka River upstream from Ishibutai Tomb. A distinctly tranquil area even in the quiet Asuka region, stunning terraced rice fields sprawl on the eastern slopes of hills around the settlement. Sacred ropes span the Asuka River at the entrance to the village, with the larger one being called the Inabuchi and the smaller being called the Hyakunomori; the ropes are placed to pray for luck in producing descendants and to ward away disease epidemics. The ropes are replaced each year in January. The village's terraced rice fields have been selected for inclusion in the 100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan list.

This famous destination for Japanese plum trees is located in Takabatake-cho, Nara City. Located in Nara Park, some 250 Japanese plum trees have been planted around the area of the Marumado-tei, a National Important Cultural Property-designated structure which was created by remodeling the storehouse of Kasugataisha Shrine. In most years, the plum trees bloom from late February to mid-March.

Nara Areas

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
