This is a Japanese confectionary store in the Yume-Kaze Plaza in front of the gate of the Todai-ji Temple in Kasugano Town, Nara City. The store makes sweets from locally grown ingredients such as Japanese Yamato-imo yam and Yoshino-kuzu arrowroot. A popular item is the Japanese hotcake sweet bean paste sandwich called Yamato sanzan dorayaki. They are made freshly daily with red beans, and flour and eggs from a Tokachi farm. There is also a cafe on the second floor where customers can enjoy sweets and Miwa Somen noodles.

This is a yomogi mochi rice cake specialty shop located on Sanjo-dori Street in Hashimoto Town, Nara City. The yomogi mochi is made from carefully selected locally grown produce. Hot rice is pounded swiftly according to traditional methods to make the soft and springy texture of the sweet. The shop is visited by many customers who come to see the skilled combination of the craftsmen turning and pounding the rice first hand.

The nicest, freshest mochi I’ve had in Japan (and I’ve tried a lot!) I also got to see them making the mochi which was really interesting.

This confectionary makes each and every one of their puddings by hand using generous amounts of ingredients sourced locally from Nara. The puddings, which come in glass jars, are popular for the cute designs of their lids. Their various seasonal puddings, such as mahoroba (splendid place) Daibutsu pudding rolls, and their soft-serve ice cream made with Daibutsu pudding are also quite popular.

This dumpling shop founded in 1878 is known for its tasty kinako dango (sweet dumplings sprinkled with roasted soy flour), each of which is carefully made the old fashioned way and served on a bamboo skewer. Guests can enjoy their dumplings inside the shop's bright Japanese-style interior. Although the shop officially closes at 5:00 p.m., we recommend going earlier in the day as it sometimes sells out and closes early.

First opened in 1999, this restaurant is divided up into three areas, the Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) Area, where guests can take their time to enjoy a meal, the Hitsuji (Sheep) Area, where you can meet and pet animals in a natural setting, and the Yamagoya (Mountain Hut) Area, a gallery used to host various exhibits and events. In the Sakura Area, course meals are available for both lunch and dinner. Their special vegetable dishes only available on nights with full moons are also popular. The Hitsuji Area offers special plates, soup sets, and more.

A kudzu jelly specialty restaurant founded in 1870 housed inside a black-painted building standing on the former site of the Todaiji temple’s west gate. Here you can taste the unique dishes and sweets of a long-standing restaurant which uses pure Yoshino-honkuzu powder, a Nara specialty product. The restaurant’s jiggling, chewy kuzu-mochi and kuzu-kiri jelly cakes are lovingly prepared to order. The restaurant also offers a full menu of savory dishes made with delicious Yoshino-honkuzu powder, including kudzu udon noodles and kudzu rice porridge. Popular with tourists seeking lunch or a place to take a break, inside, the restaurant is quiet, and its windows look out over seasonal scenery. Closest station: Kintetsu-Nara Station.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
