Kobe-Sanda Premium Outlet is representative of an outlet mall in Kobe and is located inside the precinct of Kobe Research Park Kozudai in Kita Ward, Kobe. This outlet’s modern and open design is modeled on Pasadena, an exclusive residential area in the outskirts of Los Angeles city. The outlet mall boasts of being the second largest in Japan, and many shoppers visit the restaurants and the roughly 210 high class brand shops from Japan and around the world which are lined up within the mall. Also there are a lot of nature and sightseeing spots located in the outskirts such as Arima Hot Springs and Kobe Fruit & Flower Park, and you can enjoy it together with shopping.

I made two visits in July 2022 to the Sanda Premium Outlet. Once by bus from Sannomiya Station with my daughter, around mid July (return ticket 1360 Yen pp, duration 55 minutes, picturesque route...

This venerable Japanese confectionary shop established in 1882 can be easily identified by its large watchtower-like sign. It continues to create healthy traditional Japanese sweets that never wear out their welcome. Their flagship Toyosuke Manju steamed buns feature a simple Kyoto-style strained bean paste filling inside of an extra-thin pastry covering. The confection first came to prominence after becoming popular with the hot spring cure-seekers who visited Ogo, which prospered as a post town on a byroad of the Saigoku Kaido Highway. The shop makes the manju several times per day out of a desire to hand customers the freshest product possible. Customers can enjoy freshly-made manju together with complementary tea inside the shop's rest space.

A long-standing chocolate specialty shop. The shop's products are made with high quality Belgian chocolate. In order to ensure customers can enjoy the most delicious chocolates possible even in Japan's high temperatures and humidity, extra thought has even been given to the boxes and tray in which the chocolates are sold. Particularly popular are the shop's cute leaf chocolates and colorful truffles. The shop's liqueur-flavored ganache, modeled after the stone paving of the Okamoto area, were granted the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare's Award in 1996.

A shop which carries ningyo fude doll brushes, a local Arima craft. Ningyo fude are Japanese writing brushes wrapped in silk thread woven to create beautiful patterns and capped at one end with a cute doll figurine. The history of ningyo fude dates back to the distant Muromachi period (1336-1573) when Emperor Kotoku, the 36th emperor of Japan, who had long struggled to produce an heir, was blessed with a child upon visiting Arima Onsen; doll brushes such as those sold here were created to celebrate the emperor's good fortune. The brushes are covered with silk thread woven in one of four traditional geometrical patterns-ichimatsu check, yagasuri arrow feather, seigaiha wave, or uroko scale. A variety of attractive color combinations are on offer for customers to choose from.

The "Tsubo Pudding" in an unglazed jar is a masterpiece that combines sweet cream, savory homemade caramel, and rich custard. It is popular not only for home use but also as a souvenir.

This café and Western-style sweets shop is about a five-minute walk from Arimaonsen Station and is inside a white building with a Western ambience. It makes one think of a café that a French person opened in Arimaonsen, and features antique furniture and stylish terrace seating, as well as Japanese rooms that really capture the hot spring town atmosphere. The main offerings are cakes with fruit and French sweets, though there's also tanba kuromame (black bean) pudding and other Japanese sweets. The “Arima rolls,” which use hot spring salt from Arima's Kaneizumi spring, are particularly popular.

A bakery located just outside the south exit of Hankyu Okamoto Station. They've been making their specialty brick oven bread since their founding in 1932. The shop is like an old-fashioned Japanese house. Packed with hand-made items, you may feel a sense of nostalgia even if it's your first time visiting. Their signature white loaves are so popular you might want to order in advance as they often sell out. Soft and chewy inside with crispy heels, it's so good you'll want to have it every day. Other popular items include their An-Doughnuts made with the same dough as their white bread and filled with coarse red bean jam and curry buns made with a roux from an Indian restaurant.

On site is a specialty shop selling the Leonidas-Belgian royal chocolate brand-and Gateau et Mois, a cake shop with a concept of ""Western treats for children."" Their Manon Cafe with a mix of praline and coffee-flavored fresh cream filling have a whole hazelnut in each one. They are so good the shop bills them as ""The Most Popular in the World."" Their macaroons made with the refined sweetness that Japanese people prefer and their baked sweets that make ideal gifts are handmade at the shop daily."

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
