A Buddhist temple located in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture that was founded in 1052 when Fujiwara no Michinaga, the father of Fujiwara no Yorimichi, turned a villa he had inherited into a temple. Due to the pessimism of the time which believed the world was coming to an end, Pure Land Buddhism grew in popularity, and the temple’s hall was designed to recreate the Western Paradise, a key aspect of the faith. The luxurious hall enshrines a seated figure of Amitabha created by the Buddhist sculptor Jocho. Most of the original temple excluding the main hall, Kannon hall, and bell tower were destroyed by fire. In the Byodoin Museum Hoshokan, however, visitors can view a Chinese Phoenix depicted on the ceiling and temple bell (National Treasures) as well as 26 of the 52 floating bodhisattva figures suspended from the ceiling of the main hall.

I visited Byodoin Jinja early April 2023. While the cherry blossoms had bloomed early here in UJi a fair amount were still at close to full bloom. In addition there was lovely blooming lavender on...

A Buddhist temple located in Uji, Kyoto and the 10th station on the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. Said to have been founded in 770, legend has it that the temple’s principal object of worship, a figure of the thousand armed Kannon, emerged from the rocky pool deep in the temple grounds. The 16,000 square meter garden blossoms with seasonal flowers and is famed for its 20 thousand azaleas of various types in spring and 10 thousand French hydrangeas of 50 varieties in early summer. The fall foliage in autumn is also beautiful and the temple is so famous for this site it has become a byword for the autumn colors locally.

I visited the Mimurotoji and its gardens under the suggestion of a Japanese friend. The view that met us shortly after the entrance was nothing short of spectacular! Tucked away from the usual...

The main shrine building of this Shinto shrine is believed to be Japan’s oldest example of shrine architecture and is dedicated to Prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko, Emperor Ojin, and Emperor Nintoku. The main shrine building, a National Treasure, is thatched with hinoki bark and is flanked on either side by inner shrines. All three buildings are built in the same nagare-zukuri architectural style. The front shrine standing in front of the main shrine building, a National Treasure, is built with hinoki cypress felled in the early Heian period and is a rare example of the ancient shinden-zukuri architectural style. In 1994, the entire grounds of the shrine were registered as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto” World Heritage listing.

Beautiful cherry trees within the shrine area:A must see during the sakura-season. Also beautifully located at the Uji-River - really worth a visit.

Kyoto Uji-shi Uji Renge 116 (Byodoin Keidai)
This museum was opened in 2001 to preserve the collection from the former treasure house, which had deteriorated. The garden is designated as a famous historic landmark, and the building exterior is designed to blend perfectly with it, with special features like using natural lighting in the interior. In addition to being a registered National and Uji City Important Cultural Asset, it also displays a collection of Heian period onigawara gargoyle roof tiles excavated from archaeological sites.

A visit to the museum comes with the entrance price when visiting Byodoin Temple. I found the museum to be a great addition! The museum was pretty large with a lot of great artifacts and information...

This Shinto shrine is dedicated to Ujinowaki Iratsuko-no-Mikoto, son of Emperor Ojin. The enshrined deity had made this land his home when, according to the legend, he got lost on the way to Uji from Kawachi province. A divine messenger in the form of a rabbit called a “Mikaeri Usagi” (turning back rabbit) guided him back by hopping along a little way and then looking back as if to say, “Follow me,” before hopping on a little further. As such the omikuji fortunes are contained in cute little ceramic rabbits.

Not worth a visit although its on route to the Genji museum and Ujigami shrine. However the Ujigami shrine is also not worth it. Havent visited the museum though. Its free so no loss except your...

Koshoji is a temple located in the city of Uji, Kyoto Prefecture. It was the first temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism built in Japan, founded by Dogen as Kosho Horinji Temple. Its principle image is that of Sakyamuni and two bodhisattvas. The path to this temple is famous for its tree buds and cherry blossoms in the spring and for its colorful leaves in the fall. Among its religious offerings are meditation retreats on the first and third Mondays of the month and sampler sessions of zazen that are open to the public.

"This shrine to Konohanasakuya-hime is located south of Byodoin Temple. It is said to grant prayers for marriage and safe childbirth. Its unique annual festival, which sees many visitors each year, is often called ""anya no kisai"" because it starts in the dark of night at midnight every June 5th with all the lights in the surrounding area extinguished."

This authentic tearoom was built for the purpose of promoting Uji tea and popularizing Japanese tea ceremony. In addition to serving delicious Uji tea, it also offers tea-serving experiences. While usucha (weak matcha tea), sencha (medium-grade green tea), and gyokuro (high-grade green tea) can be enjoyed without a reservation, some of the teahouse's offerings including all tea ceremony experiences require a reservation made three days in advance. Make sure to check which offerings require reservation ahead of time.

Kyoto Areas

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
