This Buddhist temple’s origin dates back to the Enryaku period (782–806), when the priest Saicho opened a temple in the To-do on Mt. Hiei; the temple moved to its current location in 1871. The temple grounds are filled with historic buildings, including the Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall and reception halls for Imperial and regular guests. The Amida Hall on the south side of the grounds houses a figure of Amitabha flanked by two attendants, a National Treasure. There are numerous other highlights, including the beautiful moss-covered Shuheki-en and Yusei-en gardens. Seasonal flowers and natural beauty can be enjoyed on the temple’s grounds year round, as well, including cherry blossoms in the spring and fall foliage in autumn.

The great thing about Sanzen-in is that each way one looks, the view is different. This visit (not our first) it was a chilly day and we were grateful for the hot tea served. Take your time here...

A Buddhist temple located in Oharashorinin-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. One of the three Tendai Monzeki temples, it stands on the road approaching the Sanzen-in Temple. The temple’s beautiful “framed garden” is powerful and lush, with a 300 year old sal tree and a 700 year old Japanese white pine which has been designated a Natural Monument by the city of Kyoto. Visitors can pass through a tatami room with a view of the white pine and exchange a ticket provided at the grounds entrance to receive a cup of matcha green tea and an original temple confection.

This temple is in Ohara, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, and is famous for its ties to the Tale of the Heike Legend. Exact details of the temple's establishment are unknown but it is said to have been constructed by Shotoku Taishi in 594 to ensure his father's, Emperor Youmei's, happiness in the next life. Taira no Tokuko, also Kenreimon-in, daughter of Taira no Kiyomori, wife of Emperor Takakura and mother of Emperor Antoku, survived her drowning suicide attempt at the battle of Dan-no-Ura. Afterwards she became a nun secluded within the temple to pray for the happiness of her son and Tira clan in the next life. On the grounds are a pond and cherry trees associated with visits from Cloistered Emperor Goshirakawa and the Tale of the Heike and the changing autumn colors provide beautiful scenery.

haunting reminder of the transience of life. beautiful place:again like Gioji, best experienced in solitude.

Jikko-in Temple is a sub temple of Shorin-in Temple. There is a garden where one can enjoy the flowers blooming in all four seasons including double-flowered cherry blossoms, pheasant’s eyes and dogtooth violets. A must-see are the continually blossoming cherry trees which are in season from autumn to spring, an unusual sight across all of Japan. In the tearoom one can enjoy tea while gazing out over the garden.

A fantastically quiet, calm, and profoundly peaceful little temple. Make sure to stop in and have a cup of matcha while looking out on the trees. It must be fantastic in the winter too when...

"A 40-minute drive from the Kyoto-higashi interchange and a 60-minute drive from the Kyoto-minami interchange. This Shinto shrine is also located right next to the ""Kuzuryu Benten-mae"" bus stop. The shrine is known for its unique way of praying, which requires worshippers to circle the main shrine building clockwise nine times. Many worshippers come here to pray for the victory of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team. The shrine was built in 1954 after its enshrined deity, Kuzuryu Benzaiten, appeared in a dream. The shrine's fortune slips are also distinctive - instead of telling you how lucky you are like the fortune slips of most other shrines, this shrine's contain words of advice and warning regarding your wish. The shrine holds a grand fall festival on November 24 each year."

First founded by the monk Tanzei Shonin in 1609 as a place for the study and instruction of the Buddha's teachings. Amongst all the famous locations for viewing the fall colors in the Ohara region the fall colors that can be viewed at Amida Temple are particularly lovely and the temple has been known for its autumn colors as far back as the Edo Period. On the southern side of the road approaching the temple stands an over 800 year old maple tree which has been designated a Natural Memorial and is one of the highlights of the temple.

Oharame was the name for the local women who would travel to Kyoto balancing firewood atop their head to peddle in the city. The design is said to originate from a Heian Period outfit. Children's sizes are available allowing parents and children to experience this dress up opportunity together. Some shops offer discounts to tourists dressed in the Oharame outfit and so it's a frequent site to see women strolling around town dressed like this.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
