Kyoto Kyoutoshi Sakyou-ku Nanzenji Front of the gate
The Nanzen-ji Zen Temple is the head temple of Rinzai Buddhism. This restaurant located in front of the temple serves traditional Kyoto kaiseki course cuisine such as its famed boiled tofu. Diners can enjoy seasonal kaiseki dishes and boiled tofu while enjoying the view of the restaurant’s garden. After your meal, why not take a stroll in the garden of the Junsei Shoin, a registered Tangible Cultural Property originally built as a space for the study of medicine in the Edo period.

I really dont like writing this, but this restaurant was such a disappointment. Just not the care and quality you come to expect in Japan. The tofu was nice, but Bream was very overcooked and...

A restaurant serving homemade udon noodles located close to the Ginkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto City. This shop popularized “omen,” Gunma-style udon noodles, when they were not yet well known in the Kansai region when the shop first opened in 1967. The noodles, made with wheat from Joshu (old name of Gunma Prefecture), are flavorful, smooth, and chewy. The noodles are steeped in a slightly strong broth made with high quality kombu kelp and skipjack tuna and are served with sesame seeds, seasonal vegetables, and salty-sweet kinpira gobo (stewed burdock root). The restaurant also serves a wide variety of other dishes depending on the season, perfect for enjoying with a cup of sake or other drink of choice.

One of my favorite meals of our trip to Japan! We arrived to a line of about 25 people and put our names down on the list. The wait was less than an hour and we were seated at the counter. A...

A venerable Japanese confectionery shop founded at the end of the Edo period located in Kyoto City’s Sakyo Ward. The shop is famous for its ajari mochi rice cakes, a popular and standard Kyoto souvenir. Resembling the conical wicker hats worn by ajari, the term for a Tendai Buddhist high priest, these elegant sweets consist of a hearty helping of an sweet bean paste stuffed inside a thin, chewy skin of mochi pounded glutinous rice. The shop’s signature mangetsu, a sweet once officially provided to the Kujo prince clan, is also popular and is only sold on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

    今回は阿闍梨餅を知人から頂きました、京都に行った時のみやげとしてよく買ってきます、あっさり味の風味で私の好きな和菓子です。

The shop known as the oldest existing yudofu (boiled tofu) store in existence is a ten minute walk from Keage Subway Station, and has been introduced on television and in newspapers. Visitors can relax leisurely on the traditional Japanese seats on the floor and look out on the Japanese garden showing a different beauty with every season. The only tofu dish is yudofu. The homemade tofu using domestic soybean is mellow, rich with a deep taste of soy. Black sesame flavored tofu, peppered skewers of vegetable, and dishes of fried pumpkin and yuba (dried bean curds) are also available.

I wanted to have a really good yudofu so I decided to try this traditional restaurant. It was a weekday and I didnt need to queue. I even had a table by the window. Negative point was the dishes. It...

A café located along Philosopher’s Walk in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture distinguished by its red apple sign. The red chairs in this white-themed and airy café give it a certain cuteness. The shop’s apple sweets and specialty apple tea are sure to perk you up in between a stroll about town. Terrace seating also available.

We have walked the Philosophers Path twice now - 6 years apart - and we were sp pleased to find this little gem of a cafe here again when we visited last week. Such a friendly welcome and simple but...

This European restaurant opened in 1970 inside of a renovated Iberian-style house originally built in 1929 to house the art collection of the Japanese-style painter Hashimoto Kansetsu. The restaurant's freshly-boiled pasta and its homemade pizza have been beloved since its opening. Guests can enjoy these and other items in the restaurant's open garden, which is surrounded by flowers.

Paid ~6000 JPY for three small pizzas (even the large option is quite small, the small very smal), would classify this place more towards the tourist trap segment than a restaurant and there are...

"This restaurant has followed the same basic concept for over 60 years, since its founding in 1960: cheap, filling meals like Mom used to make, and is loved by locals for its ""Showa-feeling"" meal sets. The popular Colorful Chicken Cutlet can be enjoyed with three sauces: grated daikon with ponzu, cheese, or sauce Americaine. This shop has a menu with pictures and English explanations, and they support PayPay and Uber Eats."

    料理はボリュームが凄く美味しい、若い店員 座りながら寝てましたよ?え?と思いました。飲食店で寝るとか 有り得ませんわ。やる気ないなら辞めろ。

"The Kyoto Tea House Building was built by Kano Shoujuan, a Japanese confectionery shop known for its famous confections such as ""Amo,"" along the ""Philosophical Road,"" named after the philosopher Kitaro Nishida, who strolled along the road to contemplate his philosophy. The teahouse can also be used as a restaurant and a sweet shop, selling Shoujuan's famous confections and seasonal Japanese sweets."

Located near Honen-in Temple along the Philosopher's Path, one of the top 100 roads in Japan, this popular yudofu restaurant has been in business for 40 years and offers a variety of Kyoto-style dishes, including specially selected yudofu with a smooth texture and rich flavor, handmade sesame tofu, and other dishes that make full use of the flavors of the ingredients.

This is a Japanese sweets shop in a hidden-away machiya (old townhouse) located a two-minute walk from JR Keihan Tofukuji Station. The pure Japanese-style interior has a relaxing, subdued feel. The shop’s inner garden gets lit up by illuminations at night, and becomes a different kind of magical space by day. Their specialty is “Torori-Warabimochi” (bracken starch dumpling), made from bracken starch from Japan and brown sugar from Okinawa’s Iriomote Island which is kneaded thoroughly with famous Kyoto water. The resulting soft and stretchable dumpling offers a brand-new taste sensation. It is complemented with the refreshingly sweet sauce of Kagawa refined sugar and Tanba black soybean flour. This dumpling is also available as a takeout option.

    昨年12月に南禅寺の方へ移転してます。 今回はお取り寄せで、とろ〜りわらび餅を頂きました。 他にはなかなか無い食感が良いですね。

This handmade rice ball shop in a residential area of Jodoji Temple in Sakyo Ward is a few minutes on foot from Kinrin Shako Mae bus stop. The charming exterior and a counter seat like a sushi shop compliments the simplicity of the rice balls they serve. The rice balls are each made freshly after taking your order using rice cooked in a special iron traditional style rice cooking pot. The popular rice balls are delicious served hot as well as cold. Guests can enjoy their rice balls with a variety of side dishes in the restaurant. There are many fillings to choose from and if you take out three or more rice balls they will be wrapped in bamboo skin.

Excellent food, incredibly well priced and located. Food cooked to order by the chef in front of you!

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
