Located a 15-minute walk from Jingu-Marutamachi Station on the Keihan Railroad, this small cafe was handed down from a grandmother to her grandchild. The retro yet charming exterior immediately attracts attention. The interior is decorated with Western-style antique furniture, but somehow it all fits in with the mood of the ancient capital, Kyoto. It also has a wide-ranging menu of drinks, making it a perfect spot for a bit of relaxation.

Salon de thé François is a stylish Western-style construction accessible on foot walking south along the Takasegawa River from Kawaramachi Station. The interior is the work of founder Tateno Shoichi, and feels just like the hall of a luxury ship. From its establishment in 1934 it has been used a place for liberal-minded people to interact, and in 2003 it was designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The coffee is the Vienna type full of fresh cream. There is also a great selection of Western sweets that go well with the coffee.

  • Ryuto no Matsu (Dragon Lantern Pine)
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Kyoto Miyazu-shi Monju 479-1
Legend states that long ago a dragon came down to earth at a pine tree located where the Amanohashidate sandbar reaches Monju. Now this cafe uses part of this legendary Ryuto no Matsu pine in its first-floor counter and second-floor table. We recommend the Chie Dora Parfait, an original confection made with Chie mochi pounded rice from Chitose Chaya Teahouse. Another popular choice is their Red Wine and Salt Milk Gelato, a collaboration between the Tango Jersey Farm and the Amanohashidate Winery.

This coffee shop first opened in 1986. It's believed to have been Japan's first entirely non-smoking restaurant. Their tables and chairs were designed over 100 years prior by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Most of the flowers decorating the tables are raised on-site. During the winter they have a heater for guests to enjoy. We recommend the cake set with includes either coffee or black tea.

Their side dish menu includes tofu skin and tofu and they also offer daily cakes and drinks.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
