About 10 minutes from the Kotosanzan Smart Interchange off the Meishin Expressway, this historic soy sauce manufacturer has been operating since the Edo period. Their soy sauce, rich smooth with a full-bodied aroma is made only with discriminatingly selected domestic contract soy farmers ‘produce, wheat, and sun-dried salt. Using cedar barrels and their own 200 year old distinctive koji yeast, the soy sauce is still made by using the old processes, the success of which depends on the skills and experience of the brewers. The Sugi-daru san-nen Jukusei, cedar barrel 3-year soy sauce, is an exceptional product. It is fermented over many months in the 100-year old Okura cask, which in itself is a registered tangible cultural property. The Kozo soy sauce, with its aromatic rich flavor is also highly recommended.

    Shiga Higashiomi Gokasho Kondo Cho
"This group of historic buildings is located in an area called the Townscape of Gokasho Kondo, which has been designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The Omi merchants who lived in the area worked according to the principle of the three ""alrights"" - ""alright for the seller, alright for the buyer, and alright for all"" - and left behind numerous storehouses and homes which still stand today. Visitors can view the interiors of some of the homes and, in Tonomura Uhei's Mansion, see what life was like in the estate of a Gokasho Omi merchant. Tonomura Shigeru's Mansion is now open to the public as a literature museum; some of its many highlights include a surprisingly elegant utensil washing facility called a kawato supplied with water directly from the neighborhood canal. The mansion of Nakae Jungoro, known in his time as the ""department store king,"" also operates as a museum in which are displayed obata deko dolls, a local traditional craft item. Visitors to Fujii Hikoshiro's Mansion can enjoy its huge traditional Japanese strolling garden built around a central pond."
