    A primeval beech forest located halfway up Mt. Mikunidake in Kutsuki-Katsuragawa Prefectural Natural Park, a park which consists of an area extending from the eastern tip of the Tanba Mountains to the western slopes of the Hira Mountains. Due to the local climate and other factors, the forest has remained virtually untouched by human hands, and even in western Japan, an area where many 250 to 350-year-old beech and Japanese horse chestnut trees grow, this is a precious example of preserved primeval beech forest.

    "A three-minute walk from Zazenso-mae bus stop. This colony of eastern skunk cabbage blooms in most years from mid-February to early March. The name of this plant in Japanese, ""zazenso"" (literally ""zazen meditation grass""), is derived from the appearance of its purple flowers, which look like a monk meditating in the seated, zazen position. If you come early enough in the season, you just might get to see the plants flowering amidst lingering snow. It is rare for eastern skunk cabbage to grow in such a large colony, and this one lies in what is believed to be the plant's southernmost limit in Japan. In 1986, the colony was designated a Specific Plant Community by the Ministry of the Environment; in 1989, it became a Green Preservation Zone under Shiga Prefecture's Natural Environment Conservation Ordinance."

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
