    A community located in Harie Shinasahi-Cho, Takashima City. The community makes use of “kabata,” interconnected water stations used for daily needs such as washing vegetables through which the abundant spring waters of the area are circulated via canals. The kabata themselves are located on the grounds of private homes and accordingly visitors may not tour them without permission; instead, a guided tour is required to see this unique and beautiful local cultural aspect.

  • Lake Biwa Canal

    A canal which connects Lake Biwa and Kyoto. The canal was planned by then governor of Kyoto Prefecture Kunimichi Kitagaki in the Meiji period in order to reinvigorate a Kyoto that had declined due to the ravages of the Battle of Toba-Fushimi and the relocation of the capital to Tokyo. The 20-kilometer-long Canal No. 1 was built first, followed by Canal No. 2 and canal sublines. The canal played a key role in the modern urban development of Kyoto and even today still supplies Kyoto neighborhoods with water.

    A fountain installed on the bank of a breakwater on the coast of Otsu Port in Hamaotsu, Otsu City. 440 meters in length, it is one of the largest fountains in the world and is capable of shooting jets of water up to 40 meters into the air. At night, the fountain is lit up, and visitors can enjoy the magical scene this creates.

    This wild bird observation space is on the Imanishi Sazanami Higyway in Kohoku-cho, Nagahama City. It's in the heart of Kohoku Waterfowl Park, in that same town along the shores of Lake Biwa. In addition to being able to see native and migratory birds who pass through year-round through the telescopes, they also have displays of fish and amphibians living in Lake Biwa to see. It's also connected to the Lake Biwa Waterfowl and Wetland Center and Roadside Station Kohoku Mizudori Station facilities.

    A water bird watching facility situated along Prefectural Route 333 in Aiba Shinasahi-cho, Takashima City. The facility has an indoor observation room from which visitors can watch the water birds on Lake Biwa through binoculars. An adjoining café serves a buffet-style lunch. The facility also conducts water bird watching tours as well as outdoor activities such as tree climbing and canoeing.

    A colony of rhododendrons located in Kaigake Rhododendron Valley in Hino Town, Gamo County, Shiga Prefecture. The slopes of the 300 to 400-meter-high valley are covered with some 3,720 square meters of rhododendrons. Hon-shakunage rhododendrons are normally an alpine plant which grow at elevations from 800 to 1,000 meters above sea level; accordingly this large of a colony at this low of an altitude is exceedingly rare and the rhododendrons have been designated a National Natural Monument. The blooming season for the flowers is from late April to early May.

    A colony of aquatic plants growing in the Jizo River in Samegai, Maibara City. There are only a few locations in Japan with the conditions needed by water-crowfoot to grow; the Jizo River, selected by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the 100 most famous rivers in Japan in the Heisei period, is one such, flowing with the clear waters of springs such as the Isame and boasting the perfect temperature for the plants. The plants bloom with tiny, plum tree-like blossoms from mid-May to late August.

    This is the name for the three Tendai Sect temples situated on the western mountainside of the Suzuka mountain range in the Koto region of Shiga. From the Kotosanzan Smart Interchange off the Meishin Expressway, the Saimyouji Temple is just three minutes, the Kongorinji Temple, about one minute, and the Hyakusaiji Temple, about eight minutes from the same interchange. Each of them is known for their autumnal maple and oak foliage and they have been selected as one of the top 100 sites for autumn foliage. The best time to enjoy these sites is from early to late November. At Saimyouji Temple, there is the unusual opportunity of being able to enjoy the sight of a blooming sakura, the Saimyouji Fudan-zakura cherry that blooms in November, together with the autumnal foliage. The verdant new green foliage in the spring is also beautiful to see.

    This old town area of central Hino once flourished during the Edo period as a castle town, and later as a merchant town. Here, one can see the vestiges of bygone times along the district streets of Okamotocho, Shimizu, Shinmachi, and Okubocho with their extended wooden fences bordering merchant magnate estates. The houses have magnificent whitewashed earthen warehouses and sajikimado windows, built just for watching the Hino Festival from the comfort of their homes. These line of houses are distinctive in that they are lined up in a zig-zag pattern similar to saw-teeth. This is typical of the castle town street designs of the civil war Sengoku period.

    A 10-minute walk from Kamisakaemachi Station on the Keihan Electric Railway, and a 10-minute drive from the Kyoto-higashi Interchange. This park is situated at the foot of Mt. Nagara and its grounds encompass the Mitsuhashi Setsuko Art Museum, the Bizoji Temple, and the Yanagidani Kannon Ryokokuji Temple. Since it opened in 1902 as the first public park in Shiga Prefecture, it has served as a space for rest and relaxation for countless numbers of people. There park has a monument inscribed with a poem by Taira no Tadanori describing the beauty of the cherry trees in the area, and just as this poem implies, the park is an extremely well-known and renowned destination for cherry blossom viewing in the spring. The park is a place where people can enjoy beautiful, natural, seasonal scenery which is conveniently accessible from the urban center of the city.

A Firefly Festival is held here each year around early June, and during that time firefly-themed paper lanterns are placed along walking paths in the event area; visitors walking near the pure river will see a magical world created by the lights of countless Genji fireflies. The fireflies engage in three flying sessions a night and are most active from around 8 p.m. to 9 p.m."

    滋賀県安曇川町の道の駅藤樹の里の東側にある中国式庭園。中国壁に囲まれた庭園には陽明門と藤樹門の二つの門から入ることが出来ます。池が配さた庭の中心には明代の建築様式の陽明亭が復元されています。水の都市浙江省にいる錯覚に落ちります。

    馬頭観音の駐車場から1時間ほどの山歩き 摩崖仏前の坂はきついです 昼食時間を含めて往復3時間ほどかかりました 登山道は整備されていて時間と体力にああせてコースを設定できます 平日は人も少なくハイキングには最適だと思います

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
