    A funazushi (old fashioned fermented crucian carp sushi) shop located in 1 Chome Nagara, Otsu City. This long-standing establishment first opened its doors in 1869. Funazushi is a fermented food which has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the prefecture, and its history dates back over 1,000 years. The shop’s funazushi is made according to traditional methods using just wild nigorobuna round crucian carp from Lake Biwa and locally grown Omi rice. In addition to funazushi, the shop sells other goods such as fish from Lake Biwa cooked and preserved in soy sauce tsukudani style.

    About 10 minutes from the Kotosanzan Smart Interchange off the Meishin Expressway, this historic soy sauce manufacturer has been operating since the Edo period. Their soy sauce, rich smooth with a full-bodied aroma is made only with discriminatingly selected domestic contract soy farmers ‘produce, wheat, and sun-dried salt. Using cedar barrels and their own 200 year old distinctive koji yeast, the soy sauce is still made by using the old processes, the success of which depends on the skills and experience of the brewers. The Sugi-daru san-nen Jukusei, cedar barrel 3-year soy sauce, is an exceptional product. It is fermented over many months in the 100-year old Okura cask, which in itself is a registered tangible cultural property. The Kozo soy sauce, with its aromatic rich flavor is also highly recommended.

    This shop can be reached by taking a 10-minute ride on the Ohmi Railway bus bound for the Chomeiji from JR Omihachiman Station; get off at the Osugi stop and the shop is just a three-minute walk away. Situated in a part of the city which was once a castle town, the shop has been making and selling Omihachiman's famous aka kon'nyaku (red devil's tongue jelly) since it was founded in 1891. Aka kon'nyaku has a fine texture and is moderately soft, and it goes great in oden and other hotpot dishes and also as sashimi and in dengaku roasted dishes. The shop's popular Kon'nyaku Kakurenbo, an original product consisting of seasoned aka kon'nyaku which has been wrapped in cod fish paste and deep fried, makes a perfect side dish for any meal as well as a snack to enjoy with beer or a cup of sake.

This agricultural cooperative makes and sells mochi rice cakes using Shiga Habutae glutinous rice, a local specialty product grown using soil containing heavy clay from the ancient Lake Biwa. The Yomogi An Mochi, the shop's most popular product, is a rice cake made with Japanese mugwort and filled with fragrant sweet bean paste. Other popular products include chewy taiyaki bean jam-filled pancakes made with rice flour; and breakfast taiyaki filled with a wiener, cheese, and eggs. In the Mochimochi House light meal area, customers can enjoy dishes made with fresh mochi rice cakes and rice flour.

    15 minutes from the Shigaraki Interchange on the Shin-Meishin Expressway via National Route 307. This longstanding shop, established in 1872, makes and sells Asamiya tea, considered one of Japan's five most renowned teas. Exquisite Asamiya tea has a distinctive scent and sweet flavor, and has been officially gifted to successive emperors. In addition to sencha, gyokuro, and other tea leaf varieties, the shop also sells Japanese sweets such as sencha donuts and kuzumochi kudzu starch cakes. Particularly popular selections from the adjoining WITH TEA cafe include the high class matcha tiramisu and the Asamiya kintoki shaved ice with green tea and sweet adzuki beans, which won the Shiga Class B Gourmet Battle's grand prize two years running.

    This longstanding Japanese pickle shop was established in 1850. The shop is situated in the center of the Maruya-cho Shopping Arcade near the Yuyukan community center. The shop's stunning wooden eave sign, made around the time the establishment first opened for business, has been designated a Scenic Important Advertisement by Otsu City. In 1914, the shop's Nagarazuke pickles, a regional pickle variety, were selected to be officially supplied to the then-Imperial Household Agency, and various materials relating to the reception of this designation are displayed in the shop. The shop is filled with Nagarazuke, senmaizuke pickled turnip slices, and a variety of other Japanese pickles made according to the same methods as when the shop was established.

    A seven-minute walk from JR Otsukyo Station. This longstanding Japanese pickle shop was established in 1953 and is situated along the Wurzburg Strabe street east of Ojiyama General Sports Park. In addition to Japanese pickles, the shop makes and sells a wide variety of other products, such as funazushi (fermented carp sushi), tsukudani (soy sauce boiled preserved foods), and Japanese deli-style foods. The shop also offers free tours of its factory, and visitors can watch the machinery at work from a second floor window or observe manual production processes and receive detailed explanations from a skilled artisan. Note that factory tours are not offered on Sundays and holidays, which are also days when the shop is closed.

    前回とても美味しかったので、また買いに行きました(^^)今回もしっかり試食して(笑)私はしそ大根のお漬物、主人は玉ねぎのお漬物。しそ大根はしっかり味がついていて白ごはんとお漬物だけでもさっぱり食べられます。玉ねぎのお漬物はさっぱりしていてシャキシャキしているのに苦くないのでおいしいです。

    This longstanding soy sauce shop has been in business for over a century and is situated along the Nakasendo Highway in Maibara City's Samegai. The famous Isame no Shimizu spring, selected for inclusion in a list of the 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters in Heisei Era, can be found here, and the shop continues to make the same rich and flavorful soy sauce using this spring water as it did when it first opened its doors. The shop's summer-only soy sauce soft-serve ice cream is covered with a special soy sauce-based sweet syrup made just for this ice cream. The aromatic soy sauce syrup and cold ice cream go surprisingly well together, resulting in an exquisitely delicious Japanese-style treat.

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
