This unagi eel restaurant with a lantern marked with the characters for charcoal grilled is located in the Ugata, Ago-cho area of Shima City, Mie Prefecture. Every morning, they slowly grill a fresh Japanese eel cut open that day over high-grade charcoal to seal in the savoriness, and the surface becomes crisp while the inside is soft and fluffy. The chemistry between it and the slightly sweet secret sauce is amazing. The chef's recommendation is the unagi-don joju (high class bowl of rice topped with grilled eel). This dish consists of four pieces of plump and savory eel that are large enough together to completely cover the rice it is placed on. With a spacious Japanese style tatami room, the restaurant is recommended for eating with families.

Japanese cuisine Tai sources fresh types of fish that are in season, and the head chef who grew up in the town offers dishes that make the most of the umami flavor of ingredients grown locally. It is most well-known for its dish of tai chazuke (boiled rice with raw sea bream, soaked in tea). They also have tai sembei (rice crackers) made from the tai and guests can take them home as a souvenir. It is located approximately three minutes on foot from Ugata Station on the Kintetsu Shima Line.

A charming seafood restaurant that’s reminiscent of a fisherman’s secret base in Shima-cho, Shima City in Mie. Try their rich variety of flavors that goes beyond the limits of Japanese food thanks to the chef and owner who well understands the tastes of Shima. Their “Assorted Arrangement” made with fresh seafood from Wagu harbor, plump Ise-ebi (spiny lobster) dishes, and rich natural abalone dishes are all incredibly popular. Enjoy this lively restaurant where locals gather and taste their sake and delicious abundant seafood cuisine.

This long-established sushi restaurant that opened in 1908 is a three-minute walk from Ugata Station. The fourth-generation owner was born and raised in Shima and specializes in hand-rolled sushi, and many loyal customers and tourists flock to this restaurant. The fish, which are caught from Ise Shima’s harbor the same day, taste and glisten like none other. Aside from hand-formed sushi, chirashi-zushi (bed of rice with sprinkled ingredients), and rolled sushi, there’re also seafood rice bowls, set meals, and daily lunch sets. The shop has a subdued ambience with counter, table, and tatami seating.

To reach this seafood restaurant, head towards Hamajima from the Ise Expressway's Tamaki Interchange, or else take a bus from Kintetsu Ugata Station bound for Shukuura and get off at the Kouzumi Stop. It's right there. They offer simple cuisine made with fresh, regional ingredients. Their Appappa Yaki is a local favorite, consisting of noble scallops baked directly on the flames without any seasoning. Their most popular meal is their hallmark, the Yacht Set, featuring an assorted platter of roasted shellfish and sashimi. Pearl Fried Rice with pearl oyster meat is a new and popular local favorite.

Kawaume was founded in the mid nineteenth century and has been serving eel dishes ever since. Isobe-cho in the city of Shima was once the only place in Japan where eels were farmed, so there was a cluster of eel restaurants in the area. Having inherited this tradition, Kawaume prepares dishes such as Kabayaki (barbecued eel) or Kimosui (eel soup) using recipes and techniques from long ago. Its most famous menu item is Kawaume Don, created by the fourth-generation owner. It differs from ordinary Unagi Don (barbecued eel over rice) in that it is topped with nori seaweed and shiso leaves, and is seasoned with wasabi-flavored soy sauce.

This sushi restaurant uses seafood from Iseshima. With the concept of taking hold of the seasons of Iseshima, most of their sushi ingredients are coastal fish purchased in the morning that day. Their menu is lined with the names of rare fish that cannot be seen elsewhere such as noresore (young conger eel) and umazura (black scraper fish). Course menus are prepared for different budgets, and you can leave it to the chef to make sushi he thinks you will like. They also have a bargain set menu for lunchtime.

Toyo-ichi is a restaurant with a retro atmosphere that serves fresh seafood. The front of the restaurant, where souvenirs are sold, is open to the outside, and the tatami rooms farther inside provide a relaxed layout for leisurely dining. The main offerings are prix fixe meals made with locally caught fish that are kept alive till the last minute. There is also a grilling space inside the restaurant, and customers can enjoy freshly grilled turbo sazae, clams, oysters, squid, and other seafood, including sea urchin grilled in the shell. Seasonal menu items such as red rockfish and scallops roasted on skewers are available only in the winter.

This fresh seafood restaurant is located in Anori, Ago-cho, Shima City. Operated by a fishing company, the restaurant serves cuisine made with seasonal seafood from Anori Fishing Port, which brings in some of the greatest amounts of fish in the entire prefecture. Here customers can enjoy fugu cuisine course meals and a la carte dishes, such as the Anori Fugu Gozen meal, which comes with wild Anori fugu Japanese pufferfish sashimi, karaage deep-fried fugu, and more.

Mie Areas

around-area-map

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
