This Kannon (Goddess of mercy) temple for driving out evil spirits is said to be the oldest in Japan. With an original legend that it was built in a place where dragons lives, there are many other dragon god legends. A popular one among them, there is a story that a male and female pair of dragons appeared from the pond and protected Kannon when the main temple caught fire 600 years ago. When the floorboards were being replaced about 10 years ago, the image of dragon emerged by chance in the grains of the boards, and this Nade Ryu (stroking dragon) became famous as a power spot since it was said you could receive benefits by stroking it.

"This Buddhist temple stands halfway up sacred Mt. Otonashi overlooking Ise Bay. The temple is said to have been founded long ago during the Tenpyo era (729-748). It is also said that the great monk Kobo Daishi visited the temple three times when establishing a temple on Mt. Asama, conveying to the temple Shingon Buddhist secrets. Kobo Daishi is deeply connected to animals, having been led to Mt. Koya by two dogs according to legend, as well as other stories connected to the monk and the frog of Okitama-no-Kami, the monkey of Sarutahiko, and a cat which protected sacred scriptures, and accordingly this temple is also widely famous as the ""Pet Temple."" The Aijuin temple on the grounds is specifically dedicated to pets. The first temple in the prefecture to offer pet memorial, cremation, and cemetery services, the temple preaches the importance of the relationship between humans and animals."

This is a Zen temple of the Rinzai school, Nanzenji sect on the mountain top of Mt. Asama in Mie Prefecture’s Ise City. Known as a temple to protect the northeast (an unlucky quarter) of Ise-jingu Shrine, it is customary to pay a visit to this temple together with Ise-jingu. It is said to have been established in the middle of the sixth century by order of Emperor Kimmei, and after 825 it flourished as a dojo (training hall) for Shingon esoteric Buddhism in connection to the monk Kukai. On the premises are a large number of edifices standing in a row such as the vermillion-lacquered hondo (main temple building) that was rebuilt in 1609, and the temple’s treasure house which displays many National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties is not to be missed. Its honzon (principal image of worship at a temple), Fukuichimankokuzo daibosatsu is one of three major Kokuzo-Bosatsu (Akasagarbha) in Japan which is also a hidden Buddhist statue that is exhibited once in 20 years in the year following Ise Jingu’s Shikinen Sengu.

Records state this ancient Buddhist temple was founded during the Tenpyo era (729-748). It is said the temple was founded in Kametanigo in what is now Maeyama-cho, Ise City by the great priest Gyoki on the order of Emperor Shomu as a place to pray for the spiritual protection of the state. In ancient times, the temple was a prominent base for the Mt. Omine Shugendo syncretic faith, with more than 10 sub-temples under its jurisdiction; today, however, only the temple's Itokuin temle building remains. There are also monuments on the grounds inscribed with poems by poets such as Sasa Kyuko XIII and Tokuda Chindo. The great homa consecrated fire festival the temple holds each year on July 7 is counted as one of the three greatest in the country. The festival entertainments in the inner and outer districts of Ise Jingu and intense prayer ritual praying for the enjoyment of all people are traditions which have been handed down through the ages to the modern day.

Located on the premises of Ise Jingu’s Naiku (Kotaijingu) in Ise City, this is a place to purify one’s entire body and soul before worshipping at the shrine. The stone-paved Mitarashi constructed on the banks of the Isuzugawa River is said to have been donated by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi’s mother Keishouin. The temizusha (ablution front) also serves the same purpose in allowing worshippers to cleanse their hands in the clean, streaming waters of the Isuzugawa River and purify themselves.

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
