With a long history since its founding in 1707, it has an Ise-like gabled roof and a large signboard with gold lettering as its marker, and is open from 5:00 a.m. in accordance with the start of shrine visits. You can enjoy a set with akafuku mochi (pounded rice cake coated with red bean paste) and Japanese green tea, and akafuku zenzai (sweet bean soup with toasted mochi rice cake) at the main branch’s cafe. • Meibutsu Henba Mochi Miyagawa Store
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Mie Pref. Iseshi Nishitoyohamachou 342-1
This long-established Japanese confectionery shop sells one of Ise's specialties, henba mochi (rice cake filled with bean paste and lightly grilled on both side). It has a dine-in space, and you can enjoy traditional Japanese sweets such as the famous henba mochi with tea. The store also has a parking lot where large buses can park and bathrooms, making it the perfect place to rest from a drive. By the way, there used to be a henba-jo to send back horses when worshippers crossed the Miyagawa River to head towards Ise Jingu Shine in the Edo period (1603-1868). It is said the henba mochi came from the sweets given there.

This udon noodle shop is right near Ujiyamada Station. They serve authentic Ise udon in the warm atmosphere of an old-fashioned store. Located next to Isetoyouke Inari-jinja Shrine, the shop is well-known, having been popular with the locals for many years and visited by celebrities. Their hallmark dish is, of course, Ise udon, with fat, chewy noodles in a rich, sweet and savory sauce. Their meat topped Niku Ise Udon and Tsukimi Ise Udon with a raw egg on top come particularly recommended.

  • Meibutsu Henbamochi Main Shop
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Mie Pref. Iseshi Obatachouakeno 1430-1
This veteran Japanese sweet shop was established in 1775. Their Henba Mochi sweets are round, flat, and browned on both sides. They're made with carefully selected, domestically produced ingredients, and the shop continues to produce them with the traditional flavor they've been known for since their founding. These tasty treats are popular for the unique texture that rice flour gives them and the melt-in-your-mouth goodness of their koshian strained bean paste filling. You can eat them right in the shop, and they're so popular that they sometimes sell out before 17:00. They also have Sawa Mochi (a sweet that's well-known in the Iseshima and Matsusaka region), Brown Sugar Mochi (made by blending brown sugar with glutinous mochi rice), and in summer, mizu yokan (chilled sweet bean jelly).

This veteran izakaya Japanese pub is located about five minutes on foot from Kintetsu Iseshi Station. It fills up from the moment it opens with regulars and visitors from afar. They serve local Mie junmai sake and seasonal fish in a room with partitionless tatami floor seating. You're more than welcome at the counter if you come alone. Their pickled iwashi sardines, are a local favorite and just one of their famous dishes. They're made with fresh iwashi marinated in sanonto caramelized sugar and rice vinegar. Their assorted platter with seasonal seafood flavors and a variety of textures comes recommended, as does their squid dish called ikanuta, prepared with their homemade vinegar miso.

This Japanese-style sweet shop is located about 10 minutes from Ise Interchange on the Ise Expressway. Many people, including the locals, love the old-fashioned, simple, and gentle flavors of this shop with a retro atmosphere founded in 1575. Niken Chaya Mochi got its start at the harbor used by pilgrims coming to Ise Jingu Shrine by boat. It features koshian bean jam between thin mochi rice cakes dusted with kinako soy flour. Ise's oldest sweet, it's been handed down over the centuries, and its bamboo leaf wrapping tied with rice straw is elegant. Their brown sugar bean jam mochi rice cakes sold exclusively on the 25th of the month are also popular.

This is a restaurant for local cuisine located in the middle of Oharai-machi, in Ise City’s Okage Yokocho. From the large wooden building constructed in Japanese style with old pieces of lumber from Ujibashi Bridge after the Shikinen Sengu (rebuilding ceremony), guests can enjoy a full range of Ise Shima’s tastes while enjoying a view of the clear streams of the Isuzukawa River, cherry blossoms, and colorful autumn foliage. Seasonal offerings such as takenoko gohan (bamboo shoots and rice) and chilled duck somen noodles are also very popular.

Tofuya is a prime example of the art of classical Japanese building technique and you can soak in the weight of history emanating from the building. Here they sell silky smooth handmade tofu and natural fresh-water eel. The Tofuya Bento (lunch box) which changes every month is highly recommended. Using seasonal ingredients to present an image of the season it will be more delicious than any other tofu. From the Ise West Interchange on the Ise Expressway it’s about a three-minute drive.

Tofu-based meals with a variety of dishes lovingly-presented in an old Japanese house with river views. Would be happy to visit again on future visits.
