The Husband and Wife Rocks is a fantastic sightseeing spot on Futamigaura Beach and this unique geographic feature has long been seen as a place to worship the sunrise. The rocks are seen as torii gates for the rising sun and are located on the sacred Okitama jinseki group of holy stones 700 meters away from the coast connected to the god Sarutahiko. The male stone is nine meters high; the female four meters. The sun can be seen rising between the rocks from May through July, while in autumn and winter, full moon appears between them.

If visiting Ise, you have to visit Meotoiwa Rocks. Its a few minutes drive from town along the coast. There is parking here, but it can be limited. There is a nice paved trail hugging the coast that...

This is the other one of Ise Jingu’s shogu, officially called Kotaijingu. It is considered to have begun when the imperial princess Yamato-hime-no-miya determined that Amaterasu Omikami would be enshrined on the banks of the Isuzugawa River. Crossing over the Ujibashi Bridge and proceeding along the long gravel path that approaches the shrine over which Japanese cedar trees tower, one will arrive at the o-seiden (main building), which is enclosed by multiple layers of fencing. The vast grounds include a kagura hall, betsugu (an associated shrine), and free rest areas for worshippers, and the entire area is enveloped in a sacred atmosphere. Visitors can take a bus from Isuzugawa Station or Ujiyamada Station and get off at the Naiku-mae stop.

A Shinto shrine famous for the Meoto Iwa (“Married Couple Rocks”) situated 700 meters off the coast. The shrine is dedicated to the god Sarutahiko Okami. The offshore Meoto Iwa are sacred rocks affiliated with Sarutahiko Okami. The rocks serve as a torii gate for those worshiping the sun. Because of their resemblance to a married couple cuddling close, the Meoto Iwa are said to be a symbol of matrimonial harmony and luck in love. Each year, on the summer solstice, you can come to worship the morning sun as it rises between the rocks. Numerous Futami frog statues, messengers of the gods donated by people whose prayers at the shrine were granted, can be found on the shrine grounds.

Several shrines along the walkway that clings to the cliff side. Dedicated to Mikestu the Shinto goddess of marriage harmony. Many statue frogs to pat for a wish. And the fascinating folklore story...

Sarutahiko Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami. It is recorded in the ancient Kojiki and Nihon shoki that the great god Sarutahiko Okami guides everything towards the best state. According to legend, after guiding Amaterasu’s grandson to Takachiho, he married Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto. He then chose to reside in Ise and from there guided the development of the nation. A shrine known as the Sarume Shrine, dedicated to Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, is located on the shrine grounds. When the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami hid herself in a cave, she was persuaded to come out again after a kagura performance of song and dance by Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto. Accordingly, she is worshiped as the goddess of the performing arts.

The deity enshrined at Sarutahiko Shrine is Sarutahiko Oogami who appears in every event and lead us to the best direction. The deity is described Japanese old historical documents such as Kojiki...

This aquarium was designed around the concepts of creating a sense of zero distance between visitors and animals, and making contact through handshakes. The aquarium holds a diverse array of events which allow visitors to play with seals lions, spotted seals, and other marine animals. During walrus walk time, visitors can also take a commemorative photo up close with a walrus. The aquarium is divided into different themed areas, including a fish hall, marine mammal square, and sea lion hall. In July 2020, a new dedicated seahorse exhibit and cafe-themed UOASIS exhibited were added.

This aquarium is not so big,but really nice aquarium! Many kinds of fish, we can see them close at hand. Of course you are not able to touch them. But you are like in the fish world.

This shrine is dedicated to the same Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto as the Inner Ise Shrine associated shrine Tsukiyomi-no-miya but is located in a shopping district in the center of Ise. This shrine has old connections to an ancient river called Okawara and farming in the area. The road that stretches straight from the Outer Ise Shrine’s Kitamikado Gate to Tsukiyomi-no-miya is known as the path of the gods and as such there is custom to avoid walking in the center of the road to allow the gods to pass. The shrine is about a 10-minute walk from the JR Iseshi Station.

This was opened in 1993, the year of the 61st Jingu Shikinensengu (rebuilding ceremony), and the name indicates words of gratitude to the shrine, which is also known as O-Ise-San. Located in the very midst of Oharai-machi at Ise Jingu Naiku’s Monzen-machi, this is a sightseeing spot with more than 60 shops where visitors can enjoy shopping and eating as they stroll around the area. The area’s atmosphere is perfect thanks to Iseji’s representative buildings from the Edo period to the Meiji period that have been reconstructed here. It is full of Ise’s charm with shops offering local sake to pair with Ise udon, the Ise confection of akafuku (anko-coated mochi), old-time candy stores and shops that assemble toys.

A nationally designated Important Cultural Property, visitors can observe elegant traditional Japanese architecture here, including a 120 tatami mat reception hall with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the Wajima lacquered tokonoma alcove in the Gotennoma hall, and a strolling garden with central pond.

This souvenir shop is just 30 seconds on foot from Ujihashi Bridge by Ise Jingu Shrine's Naiku (Inner Ise Shrine). They sell the local favorite Iwato mochi, ginger sugar, and more. Iwato mochi is associated with the auspicious events of the Iwato Kagura dance of Japanese mythology. A popular souvenir, it consists of koshian sweet bean paste made from the finest Hokkaido adzuki beans and light-flavored soft mochi rice cakes prepared with carefully selected glutinous rice and kinako soy flour. Their ginger candies are made by simmering ginger juice mixed with sugar and then pouring it into molds. They also have other flavors that include cinnamon, matcha green tea, and adzuki bean.

This hall for traditional kagura music and dance performances is located in the Naiku (inner shrine) area of the Ise Jingu shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami. The gabled, hipped roofed building stands midway along the shrine road leading from Ujibashi Bridge to the Shogu main shrine, and here visitors can purchase protective amulets and receive blessings. The grand kagura performances held at Ise Jingu are said to be the entertainment of the gods and have been held as Shinto rituals since ancient times. During the Edo period, it was extremely popular to make the pilgrimage to Ise Jingu, and it is said one in every six people in the country had visited the shrine at least once. And it was the grand kagura performances the shrine held which most attracted pilgrims during this time. According to tradition, today the prayers of shrine visitors continue to be conveyed to the gods through these performances.

This associate shrine of Inner Ise Shrine is dedicated to the gods Shinatsuhiko-no-Mikoto and Shinatobe-no-Mikoto who govern the wind and the rain. Originally called the “Wind Shrine,” after the Mongolian army was driven off by the kamikaze (divine wind) during the Kamakura-Period the shrine was elevated to the Kazahinomi no Miya. Midway along the path towards Kazahinomi-no-miya you’ll cross a river and the beautiful bridge across the river is very popular with shrine visitors.

This shrine is affectionately referred to as “atama no miya-san” or “okashira-san” because of the benefits it is said to confer upon the upper parts of the body, particularly the head. According to legend, the skull of Karahashi Chujo Mitsumori was enshrined here in 1191. Many visit to pray for academic achievement, mercantile wisdom, healing for head injuries and illnesses, especially during exam season. The water of the “Koube fountain” close to the main building is said to grant wisdom, and the nearby “Koube stone” is said to heal illness. The closest station is Ouchiyama Station.

This Kannon (Goddess of mercy) temple for driving out evil spirits is said to be the oldest in Japan. With an original legend that it was built in a place where dragons lives, there are many other dragon god legends. A popular one among them, there is a story that a male and female pair of dragons appeared from the pond and protected Kannon when the main temple caught fire 600 years ago. When the floorboards were being replaced about 10 years ago, the image of dragon emerged by chance in the grains of the boards, and this Nade Ryu (stroking dragon) became famous as a power spot since it was said you could receive benefits by stroking it.
