Mie Pref. Iseshi Futamichoue 575 Meoto Iwa in
The Husband and Wife Rocks is a fantastic sightseeing spot on Futamigaura Beach and this unique geographic feature has long been seen as a place to worship the sunrise. The rocks are seen as torii gates for the rising sun and are located on the sacred Okitama jinseki group of holy stones 700 meters away from the coast connected to the god Sarutahiko. The male stone is nine meters high; the female four meters. The sun can be seen rising between the rocks from May through July, while in autumn and winter, full moon appears between them.

If visiting Ise, you have to visit Meotoiwa Rocks. Its a few minutes drive from town along the coast. There is parking here, but it can be limited. There is a nice paved trail hugging the coast that...

Towering over the coast, this rock is shaped like a roaring lion. It is said to serve as the guardian for the nearby Oma Shrine, which is why the shrine contains no guardian dog statues. The whole coastline nearby used to be considered a Natural Monument known as “Onigajo,” but in 1958, it along with Shishi Iwa was designated a place of beauty and rebranded as the Natural Monument “Onigajo and Shishi Iwa.” In July 2004, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”
  • Oumu Seki Rock

    Mie Pref. Shimashi Isobechouerihara
Located in Isobe Town, Shima City, Mie Prefecture, this is a large slab of rock with a width of 127 meters and a height of 31 meters towering halfway up Mt. Wago. A voice emitted at the speaking place reaches to a separate listening place that is approximately 50 meters away. It was called Oumu Iwa (or Parrot Rock) because it almost seems like the rock is mimicking people’s words. The observatory at the top is a favorable view spot that looks out over the rural land, people’s homes, and the Pacific Ocean off in the distance. In addition to tourists, is a relaxing place also used by locals who come for picnics and excursions.

Mie Areas

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
