Valley Spots in Mie Area

  • Kaochidani Valley
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Pref. Nabarishi Shourenji
"This famous flower-viewing spot is located near Ochiai bus stop, 30 minutes by bus from the Kintetsu Nabari Station. Situated on the up river on the Shorenji River, a tributary of the Nabari River, this valley is also known as Kansai's Yabakei. The columnar joint of the stone cliff looks as if it was split by an ax-blow. The valley follows the river for approximately eight kilometers. Having passed through the Kaochi Tunnel, after approximately two kilometers, visitors can see the majestic natural beauty of the Byobuiwa Sheer Cliffs which dominate this landscape. The leaves in fall are especially beautiful, and this ""Valley of Autumn Leaves"" with the rock face in the background is an excellent place for photography. In the spring, there are Japanese rose and azalea flowers, and in the winter, visitors can see the frost covering the trees."

It is located on the upper reaches of the Hasu River, which flows through a nearly untouched natural area. Because the volume of water is small in proportion to the drop, Kazaore Falls is bent in the middle, and there is also a 60-meter Takadaki waterfall. Rock formations, such as Inutobi-iwa Rock and Rokkaku Byobu Rock, have given the gorge a reputation for its scenery. In addition, a four-kilometer path has been laid out in an old-growth forest, and the area is especially attractive in the fall, when the leaves change color.

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
