This Shinto shrine in Shima-cho, Shima City, Mie Prefecture presents a beautiful contrast with its vermilion torii gate and the blue sea. It's said to provide the boon of maritime safety and was originally established according to the villagers' wishes nearly 400 years ago, dedicated to Inari, a fox god. An early ritual there was called Konkon-san (relating to a fox's barking), and people still leave many fox figurines as offerings today. The painted ceiling of the main shrine was done by the artist Nomura Tossai and his disciple. Its many vivid pictures and the roof tile figures of fairy tale protagonists Urashima Taro and Otohime of the Dragon Palace have been designated Town Cultural Assets.

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
