The Husband and Wife Rocks is a fantastic sightseeing spot on Futamigaura Beach and this unique geographic feature has long been seen as a place to worship the sunrise. The rocks are seen as torii gates for the rising sun and are located on the sacred Okitama jinseki group of holy stones 700 meters away from the coast connected to the god Sarutahiko. The male stone is nine meters high; the female four meters. The sun can be seen rising between the rocks from May through July, while in autumn and winter, full moon appears between them.

This is the other one of Ise Jingu’s shogu, officially called Kotaijingu. It is considered to have begun when the imperial princess Yamato-hime-no-miya determined that Amaterasu Omikami would be enshrined on the banks of the Isuzugawa River. Crossing over the Ujibashi Bridge and proceeding along the long gravel path that approaches the shrine over which Japanese cedar trees tower, one will arrive at the o-seiden (main building), which is enclosed by multiple layers of fencing. The vast grounds include a kagura hall, betsugu (an associated shrine), and free rest areas for worshippers, and the entire area is enveloped in a sacred atmosphere. Visitors can take a bus from Isuzugawa Station or Ujiyamada Station and get off at the Naiku-mae stop.

A Shinto shrine famous for the Meoto Iwa (“Married Couple Rocks”) situated 700 meters off the coast. The shrine is dedicated to the god Sarutahiko Okami. The offshore Meoto Iwa are sacred rocks affiliated with Sarutahiko Okami. The rocks serve as a torii gate for those worshiping the sun. Because of their resemblance to a married couple cuddling close, the Meoto Iwa are said to be a symbol of matrimonial harmony and luck in love. Each year, on the summer solstice, you can come to worship the morning sun as it rises between the rocks. Numerous Futami frog statues, messengers of the gods donated by people whose prayers at the shrine were granted, can be found on the shrine grounds.

Sarutahiko Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami. It is recorded in the ancient Kojiki and Nihon shoki that the great god Sarutahiko Okami guides everything towards the best state. According to legend, after guiding Amaterasu’s grandson to Takachiho, he married Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto. He then chose to reside in Ise and from there guided the development of the nation. A shrine known as the Sarume Shrine, dedicated to Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, is located on the shrine grounds. When the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami hid herself in a cave, she was persuaded to come out again after a kagura performance of song and dance by Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto. Accordingly, she is worshiped as the goddess of the performing arts.

This 203-meter high observatory is located in the southern part of the Shima Peninsula. It is situated on the ria coastline of Ago Bay. There are about 60 small islands in the bay, and the observatory gives you a commanding view of their beauty. It offers three decks that give you a view in all directions of the Shima area. Halfway up Yokoyama to the observatory is the Sozo-no-Mori Yokoyama rest house. There is a promenade leading to the observatory that takes 30 minutes. The area is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot, with the “Yokoyama Sakura Festival” held in the early spring.

This castle is also called the Hakuho (white phoenix) castle as the white shining walls of this three-story castle look almost like a phoenix resting its wings. Distinguished castle designer Todo Takatora, who took up the position of feudal lord of Tsu Domain, Ise Province originally built a five-story castle keep but it was destroyed during a great storm in 1612. The current castle keep was restored in 1935. The beautiful stone walls with a height of 30 meters as well as the inner moat remain as they were at the time when Takatora designed them, and the castle was designated as a national historic site in 1967, while the castle keep was designated as an Iga City Tangible Cultural Property in 1985.

This is one of Ise Jingu’s shogu and enshrines the deity Toyo’uke-no-Omikami, who provides companionship and sacred food to Amaterasu-Omikami. The official name is Toyo’ukedaijingu. Toyo’uke-no-Omikami is revered as the guardian deity of industry related to the necessities of life (food, clothing & shelter) as well as various other types of industry. In addition to the Shogu, the premises of which are covered in white gravel, is the Magatamaike Pond where there is a Kiyomori camphor tree related to Taira no Kiyomori and where Japanese iris and bloom, and the Mimaya where sacred horses were kept, as well as four betsugu (associated shrines). It is customary to worship here first before moving on to the Naiku. The closest train station is Iseshi Station.

A Shinto shrine; the inner sanctuary enshrines the shrine’s principal god, Sarutahiko Okami. Sarutahiko Okami is worshipped as a god of fortune who brings peace and happiness to all living creatures. He is also believed to provide such benefits as safe travels, luck in love, bountiful children and grandchildren, protection from evil, and better fortunes. A teahouse called the Suzumatsu-an can be found on the shrine grounds. The teahouse, together with a garden, was donated to the temple by Konosuke Matsushita, founder of Panasonic, in prayer for the further development and growth of the tea ceremony. The teahouse is open to the general public and is not dedicated to a specific tea ceremony school.

"This castle site park sprawls in front of Uenoshi Station on the Iga Line. Iga Ueno Castle, the park's symbol, is notable for its high stone walls built by Warring States period commander Todo Takatora. Due to the beauty of the white, three-tiered fortress, it is also known as Hakuho (""White Chinese Phoenix"") Castle. The park also has a variety of facilities brimming with history, including the Ninja Museum of Igaryu, which is filled with tricks such as secret doors and revolving walls; the Haiseiden, a building whose design was inspired by the traditional travel garments worn by famed haiku poet Matsuo Basho; and the Basho Memorial Museum. An observatory located midway along the Pearl Road following the coastline. Located on top of 162 meter tall Mt. Hakoda, visitors can enjoy an impressive panorama encompassing the Chita Peninsula and Cape Daio. On clear days Mt. Fuji is also visible. The observatory also has a café and restaurant selected as offering one of the 30 best views in all Japan. There’s also a shop selling local specialty products and a light meal corner where visitors can enjoy popular Ouchiyama soft serve ice cream.

The oldest temple in Tsu City, it is located in Sakae-machi, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture and said to have been built by Prince Shotoku at the imperial request of Empress Suiko. It originally had larger premises, but the majority of it was burned down during WWII. It includes the grave of Kaokujuei Zenni, Oda Nobunaga's biological mother, the statue of Prince Shotoku, an important cultural property, and the statue of Bhaisajyaguru. There are many valuable cultural properties that remain such as the mountain gate that is a tangible cultural property of the city. In addition, the temple also conducts a Zen experience course where you can get an easy taste of the atmosphere of a Zen temple, and sutra copying.

The park is comprised of two main areas. The first is the environment and welfare plaza. Here you’ll find a park golf course, play equipment, and a tree peony garden. A tree peony festival is held here around mid-April. The other area is the Ume Park. This area hosts one of the largest ume (Japanese apricot) gardens in the Tokai area, as well as a blueberry garden. An ume festival is held here around mid-February. Special events are also held at the park during which it bustles with visitors. It depends on the ripeness of the ume, but in general around early June you can also try picking ume in the park.

Seki-juku in Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture was a post town serving as the 47th of the 53 Stations of the Tokaido in the Edo period (1603-1868). On the Old Tokaido Road a five-minute walk from JR Seki-juku Station, it is still preserved, and you can get the sense that you have slipped back in time to the Edo period. In the vicinity, there are many interesting places such as a museum introducing the history of Seki-juku and long-established stores, and it is filled with spots to take photographs. In addition, there are still over 200 machiya (traditional wooden townhouses) built from the end of the Edo period (1603-1868) to the Meiji period (1868-1912), and the area itself has been chosen as a Nationally-designated Important Traditional Architecture Preservation District and one of Japan's top 100 roads.

A Shinto shrine located a 10 minute drive from the Kuwanahigashi Interchange whose history dates back over 1,500 years. The shrine's origins are believed to lie in the building of a shrine here by Emperor Yuryaku in the latter half of the fifth century. The deity enshrined in the main shrine is Amatsuhikone no Mikoto, the son of Sume Omikami. The shrine was destroyed in a wartime fire in 1572. After being rebuilt in the Edo period, the shrine experienced such a revival in popularity, it was said that if one were going to visit the famous Ise Jingu shrine, one must also visit this one. The Tado Festival, held in May, attracts many visitors who come to watch an event in which gallant men ride horse up a steep, two meter near vertical precipice; the number and the order in which riders surmount the precipice foretells how good the harvest will be that year.

A research garden operated by Akatsuka Botanical Garden located in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture. The garden was created with the purpose of preserving for future generations Japan's traditional techniques for growing weeping plums. Managed by skilled professionals, some 200 plum trees are grown on the grounds with a focus on the double blossomed Kureha weeping plum. The garden also contains some of the largest weeping plum trees in Japan. The garden is open to the public from February through March, and, depending on the date, the trees are lit up at night. Entrance fees change depending on the date, so be sure to check the garden's official Twitter feed before going.

東名阪道、新名神どちらからも便利な場所に有り、梅の名所です。３月８日に行きましたが、まだ三分咲きでした。投稿している３月15日には満開になったようなので再度行く予定です。入園料は1,700円と安くはないので花の開花状況は要チェックです。レストランはありませんが、移動販売の軽食や鈴鹿名物の穴子寿司などは購入できます。お土産は充実していました。

A roadside station identifiable by its wooden, tiled roof building located a one minute walk from JR Seki Station and a five minute drive from the Seki Interchange on the Meihan Expressway in Kameyama City. The station's shop sells souvenirs such as popular sweets from the Kameyama-Seki area, Ise tea, and folk crafts; as well as farm-fresh vegetables. The station's restaurant serves miso yaki udon noodles, a popular local cheap eat; Kameyama ramen; and sweet Kameyama tea lattes. The station also has a tatami mat rest area and a walkway covered with sharp bumps designed to provide walkers with a painful albeit blood flow-promoting ashitsubo massage effect.

関駅からすぐ、国道1号沿いにある道の駅。土産物売り場、農産物即売所、軽食コーナー、観光案内所などがある。また2階には「富永一朗漫画廊」があり、漫画家・富永一朗の作品を展示している。建物内のトイレは工事中で、駐車場に仮設トイレがたくさん置かれていた。

Mie Areas

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
