This complex is at the entrance to Kumano, the World Heritage Site area. To reach it, take the Mie Kotsu Bus from JR Kumanoshi Station and get off at the Onigajyo-higashiguchi Bus Stop. It's about a three-minute walk from there. The first-floor shop sells drinks made with Niihime, a special citrus fruit of the area, finished products, and the rare Nachiguro-ishi black stone that's only found in Kamikawa-cho, Kumano City. Their second-floor Sea View Restaurant offers a menu with local ingredients including dishes like their Red and White rice bowl with Kumano sea bream and tuna. Their crunchy shrimp cutlets and their local Niihime Burgers with tartar sauce made with Niihime juice are popular.

This souvenir shop is just 30 seconds on foot from Ujihashi Bridge by Ise Jingu Shrine's Naiku (Inner Ise Shrine). They sell the local favorite Iwato mochi, ginger sugar, and more. Iwato mochi is associated with the auspicious events of the Iwato Kagura dance of Japanese mythology. A popular souvenir, it consists of koshian sweet bean paste made from the finest Hokkaido adzuki beans and light-flavored soft mochi rice cakes prepared with carefully selected glutinous rice and kinako soy flour. Their ginger candies are made by simmering ginger juice mixed with sugar and then pouring it into molds. They also have other flavors that include cinnamon, matcha green tea, and adzuki bean.

This store is adjacent to JR Matsusaka Station. It is known for its wide range of products ranging from food to accessories. They sell Matsusaka beef that they'll ship regionally, famous Matsusaka sweets, local cotton, marine products, and merchandise featuring a local character known as Chachamo. For a shop of its size, it has plenty to choose from and is perfect for your Mie and Matsusaka souvenir shopping. Lots of visitors stop by while waiting for the train, and the parking lot in front of the station makes it easy if you're coming by car.

"This shop sells Iga kumihimo cords, a traditional craft which has been a popular Mie souvenir since ancient times. The shop stands in a corner of the Oharai-cho district, originally a town area which grew up around the Ise Jingu shrine. The shop sells cords for traditional uses such as tying kimono sashes and scrolls, as well as items suited to modern purposes such as cellphone straps and netsuke belt toggles. The shop's Iga kumihimo cords, woven one at a time by hand according to a traditional method using gold, silver, and silk thread, are each unique and different and make perfect Ise souvenirs. The shop's cords woven in the shape of the components which make up the character for ""to come true"" have become popular as charms which are said to make one's wish come true."

This veteran shop specializing in Ise kamaboko is about five minutes on foot from JR and Kintetsu Ise City Station. Their high-grade kamaboko produced by skilled craftsmen could never be made by a machine. The most popular variety is Ise hiryozu, a filling fried fish cake incorporating nine healthy ingredients including Ise hijiki that's delicately simmered for about 15 minutes in rice oil. Their Cheese Sticks, satsuma-age kamaboko with piping hot cheese, has long been a best seller with customers of all ages.

This meat cuisine restaurant, standing on Prefectural Route 60, is located in Naka-machi, Matsusaka City. The longstanding establishment opened in the Meiji period and serves sukiyaki, steaks, and amiyaki grilled foods using Matsusaka beef raised on company-owned farms. The restaurant's sukiyaki, sauteed on an iron skillet over a charcoal fire, has been a signature dish since it first opened its doors, and those who order it can savor the delicious flavor and aroma of Matsusaka beef laced with smooth, high quality fat.

This old-fashioned toy store was started out of a desire to see the smiling face of a delighted grandchild. The store carries a wide selection of old-fashioned toys which will be familiar to grandma and grandpa and brand new to their grandchildren. From a wooden set of fish grilling toys for playing house, to Kamikara paper craft toys, everything the store sells has been chosen with an emphasis on safety, materials, and construction. The shop's charming traditional wooden Ise gangu toys make perfect souvenirs of your visit to Ise. The shop's Ise dialect karuta card game, which uses examples of the local Ise dialect in place of the more traditional classic poems, is also popular.

Located approximately a five-minute drive from the Ise Expressway Seiwataki Interchange, this is the antenna shop of Kokekokko Republic, which has a large chicken signboard as its marker. Reasonably priced because it is a direct sales store, you can purchase and eat safe and fresh cage-free fertilized eggs and chicken meat. In addition to their famous tamago-kake gohan (raw egg over rice bowl) with all-you-can-eat eggs, their set with locally-raised chicken also gets good reviews. They also sell handmade cream puffs, pudding and castella sponge cake using plenty of cage-free fertilized eggs.

    Mie Pref. Iseshi Nishitoyohamachou 342-1
This long-established Japanese confectionery shop sells one of Ise's specialties, henba mochi (rice cake filled with bean paste and lightly grilled on both side). It has a dine-in space, and you can enjoy traditional Japanese sweets such as the famous henba mochi with tea. The store also has a parking lot where large buses can park and bathrooms, making it the perfect place to rest from a drive. By the way, there used to be a henba-jo to send back horses when worshippers crossed the Miyagawa River to head towards Ise Jingu Shine in the Edo period (1603-1868). It is said the henba mochi came from the sweets given there.

  • Meibutsu Henbamochi Main Shop

    Mie Pref. Iseshi Obatachouakeno 1430-1
This veteran Japanese sweet shop was established in 1775. Their Henba Mochi sweets are round, flat, and browned on both sides. They're made with carefully selected, domestically produced ingredients, and the shop continues to produce them with the traditional flavor they've been known for since their founding. These tasty treats are popular for the unique texture that rice flour gives them and the melt-in-your-mouth goodness of their koshian strained bean paste filling. You can eat them right in the shop, and they're so popular that they sometimes sell out before 17:00. They also have Sawa Mochi (a sweet that's well-known in the Iseshima and Matsusaka region), Brown Sugar Mochi (made by blending brown sugar with glutinous mochi rice), and in summer, mizu yokan (chilled sweet bean jelly).

Mie Areas

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
