This brick oven-baked handmade bread a three-minute walk from Arimatsu Station on the Meitetsu Nagoya Line. The townscape balances the old Tokaido Road ambience with the modern lifestyle wonderfully. This establishment sells original brick-oven baked pan in a space that used to be a storehouse belonging to an old tie-dye wholesale merchant family. Organic wheat made domestically with few agrochemicals is used, as is natural yeast. The bread is available for takeout, or you can enjoy it along with a healthy organic beverage and soup in the courtyard cafe space.

Kiyomemochi Sohonke, located about two minutes’ walk from the West Exit of Jingu-mae Station, is a well-established Japanese sweet shop. You can feel the history from the shop’s appearance standing in front of Atsuta-jingu Shrine, and it opened as Kiyome tea house built in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868). Kiyomemochi was started to sell to worshippers and is known for pilgrimage souvenirs today as suggested by “mocha cleansed for Atsuta pilgrimage.” Kiyomemochi is a Habutae-silk like rice cake with a brand of Kiyome ironed wrapping smooth sweet bean paste, and is sleek and very soft. Kiyomemochi with a flaky and sweet chestnut is also popular.

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
