You’ll find this South Indian restaurant on the first basement floor of the commercial facility KITTE Nagoya inside the JP Tower Nagoya building directly accessible from Nagoya Station. The authentic South Indian curry really brings out the flavor of ingredients with various spices. There’s also biryani, made from various ingredients and spices boiled with white rice, as well as popular “meals” that consist of vegetables and beans. The exotic atmosphere and calm ambience makes this place great for girls-only gatherings and dates.

I was lucky to get a seat at this popular Indian curry restaurant at lunchtime. The meal I chose was made up of small dishes which were all well spiced. Good atmosphere.

This is the Nagoya branch of the famous Aoyama café Kihachi. The space has a very relaxing, adult ambience. You have your standard sandwiches and cakes as well as pancakes with bacon and other original offerings. The special dish only available at the Nagoya location is “Ogura-an toast”, which comes with sweet bean paste and Mascarpone cheese. There are also many seasonal sandwiches, parfaits, and other items offered monthly.

You’ll find this restaurant on the 12th floor of Nagoya Central Towers. It was renovated in 2015 and has a subdued atmosphere. The menu is based on French cuisine, but in true Kihachi fashion, its dishes are universal. You can tell them in advance about any allergies or food preferences (Halal, vegetarian, etc.) you have. In addition to being directly accessible from the station, there are private rooms, perfect for hosting guests and groups.

Ryoguchiya Korekiyo is a Japanese confectioner that first opened in 1634. This location in the Meichika Shopping Center under Nagoya Station, is one of the cornerstones of the shopping area. Their most famous treat is a dried candy called Ninin-Shizuka (Two people in silence) named by the 11th head of the company after the chloranthus serratus flower blooming in his garden. You can also order bespoke dorayaki (pancakes with adzuki red bean paste fillings) style egg sweets with the logo of the shop branded on them. With the original shop logo pressed on the side they make for a great souvenir.

Miyakagi, located near the Naya Bridge, opened in 1899 and serves “kashiwa” (chicken) and eel. Being able to enjoy delicious Nagoya chicken and eel at once is this restaurant’s specialty. Its famous “hitsumabushi” (eel cooked over charcoal with soy-flavored sauce and served over rice) uses a sauce recipe that’s been passed down since the restaurant opened. The chicken hot pot dish “miso suki,” which uses Mikawa red chicken and a soup with a base made using haccho miso from Okazaki, is popular as well. Those with small appetites can enjoy sides like “umaki” rolls and “momoyaki.”

Another great dining experience in Nagoya. Two levels of dining options. Feels like you are family when dining here. They are know for their fresh water eel. Their signature dish even comes with...

This restaurant is located in the Esca underground shopping center beneath Nagoya Station. Their lunch menu is offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes dishes such as their Filleted Shrimp in Cutlet Sauce rice bowl. Their Shrimp Cutlet sandwich is a popular take-out option.

This restaurant is a three-minute walk from the Taikodori exit of JR Nagoya Station on all lines. Located in the basement of Esca, this kishimen shop opened in 1890. The salt levels and thickness of the soup change with the season, and the flat noodles are made without additives and served in a rich soup stock made from dried bonito and mackerel scad. There’s also “sanshoku-zen” and “happo-zen” sets as well as the popular “miso kishi.”

Nagoya is famous for their unique style of udon. I have eaten udon in many areas Japan and this style is one of my favorites. It is a broader noodle that has a unique taste.

This French confectionery is an eight-minute walk from Exit 8 of Marunouchi Station on the Tsurumai Line. It has an adorable exterior that fits in with its surroundings. The shop name, “Chandelier,” means “candlestick” and suggests warmth and peace of mind. The light streaming in through the windows combines with the gentle interior lighting to create a comfortable atmosphere. There’s a dining space where you can enjoy some coffee or flavored tea with their famous tarts and cakes. Reservations are required to use this space, and the shop is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Kozakuraya Kazukiyo Main Store, located about six minutes’ walk from Nakamurakoen Station on the Higashiyama Subway Line, is an old-established Japanese sweet shop which opened in 1912. Seasonal higashi (traditional dried Japanese sweets) have been made from the first generation, and have been popular as souvenirs and gifts from the store’s establishment. While keeping its traditions, the fourth generation has been creating fusion Japanese sweets with a new concept which is very Kozakuraya Kazukiyo. Especially popular is a fruity daifuku (rice cake with sweet bean paste) Ohoho wrapped around a whole fruit. The wrapped fruits including strawberries, pione, mikan mandarins and fruit tomatoes are changed according to the seasons.

Ekikama Kishimen in the center of Chuo Concourse located one minute’s walk from the Central Exit of JR Nagoya Station is a specialty Kishimen (flat Japanese noodles) restaurant. It is in the perfect location at the train station, and is always crowded with passengers who are waiting for their trains and repeat customers. It has a Japanese style atmosphere and is very spacious. It opens from seven o’clock in the morning so you can enjoy a breakfast set meal with kishimen. The taste of kishimen with its springy texture is made from soy sauce, salt and miso (soybean paste). Torimiso kishimen with Nagoya cochin based on sweet and spicy chicken miso with Nagoya cochin is highly recommended. The set meal with tenmusu (a rice ball with tempura) is also recommended.

Fukyuen Otobashi Main Shop, located ten minutes’ walk from Kanayama Station, is a well-established Japanese sweet shop featuring wooden architecture with a tiled roof, and situated near the Otobashi intersection. Kikumonaka, the hallmark product, is exquisite as the bean paste using azuki red beans produced in Hokkaido pairs well with the monakadane (the wafers). The freshly made wafers are crispy and aromatic. Even after some time has passed, you can enjoy a taste and texture that is close to a fresh wafer by using an oven toaster. This shop was established in 1927.

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
