    Maruya Haccho Miso, which has stubbornly persisted with its traditional method of making miso since it was founded in 1337, uses only soybeans, salt, and water to create a hard miso with a taste unchanged from the past that has been thoroughly fermented for two summers and two winters. Touring the factory is also possible, and visitors can enjoy the scenery from Haccho Miso’s miso storehouse. It is approximately three minutes on foot from Naka-Okazaki Station on the Aichi Loop Railway.

    Kiyomemochi Sohonke, located about two minutes’ walk from the West Exit of Jingu-mae Station, is a well-established Japanese sweet shop. You can feel the history from the shop’s appearance standing in front of Atsuta-jingu Shrine, and it opened as Kiyome tea house built in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868). Kiyomemochi was started to sell to worshippers and is known for pilgrimage souvenirs today as suggested by “mocha cleansed for Atsuta pilgrimage.” Kiyomemochi is a Habutae-silk like rice cake with a brand of Kiyome ironed wrapping smooth sweet bean paste, and is sleek and very soft. Kiyomemochi with a flaky and sweet chestnut is also popular.

Since getting its start over in 1830 as a koji fermentation starter maker near Nagoya Castle, they've been making sweet, low-salt Saikyo Shiromiso utilizing the koji. Now key to the flavor of local cuisine, it's used to make udon noodles in miso broth, Nagoya's signature dish. White miso has long been a popular seasoning and has become an essential for the modern table.

    A seafood shop located about 20 minutes by high-speed boat from Kouwa Port and about five minutes on foot from Nishi Port. The fisherman owner sells dried items made of carefully selected seafood. Dried geoduck clams, a Himakajima Island specialty, is one of their most popular items. Dried octopus is a Himakajima Island local favorite. Theirs is soft and tasty and along with fatty conger eel gets good reviews. Their seasonal products such as dried puffer fish and young lance fish also come recommended. They also have workshops where you can try your hand at making the dried octopus.

Their miso and tamari have a deep, rich flavor from the brewing bacteria and two-hundred year old cedar casks that have been passed down through the generations. Their signature additive-free miso is made with domestic soybeans and sun-dried salt before being carefully fermented for three years. Their versatile tamari seasoning is rich and sweet, with 16% salt that is less than ordinary varieties. Their popular nametake mushroom and soy sauce preserve has no artificial flavors.

    Yamada Gohei Mochi shop, located in the castle town around Inuyama Castle, is famous for its rich, handmade sauce. They roast the mochi skewers for about three minutes on order, slather it in their special sauce, and hand the skewer over so you can eat while you stroll the streets. Depending on the season you can also get roasted sweet potatoes, shaved ice, soft-serve ice cream and more. It’s located ten minutes’ walk from Meitetsu Inuyama Line Inuyama Station.

The handmade candies made with brown sugar and sesame seeds, syrup, and soybean flour, contain many minerals and vitamins and have a simple, rustic flavor with a hint of cinnamon. It is also said that the Lord of Inuyama Castle would treat his retainers to the sweets as food in battle because the sweets were full of nutrition. Sweets branded with the Inuyama City official character, Wanmaru-kun, are also very popular. The nearest station is Inuyama Station.

You can purchase a set of four recommended cheeses, including “Bleu D'Auvergne,” a famous variety of blue cheese. There’s also porch seating for a more liberated dining experience.

    Jiraiya, opened in 1987, is a shop selling Nagoya-style Tenmusu. Tenmusu is a rice ball filled with a prawn tempura, and the small prawn with its chewy texture goes well with the rice cooked slightly hard. A natural bamboo sheath used for wrapping it not only absorbs extra moisture from the rice ball but also has superior heat insulation. It consists of five rice balls which are equivalent to about one bowl of cooked rice (for one serving). It is ideal as a meal on the go and a present for a host.

Freshly made dumplings are spongy and soft, and the fragrant aroma of reduced sweetness soy sauce drifts about. This well-known traditional shop is loved by local residents as well as tourists.

    大須商店街の有名なお団子屋さんです。1本100円でみたらし団子を買ったのですが、個人的にはヤマザキの3本入り100円程度売っているみたらし団子のほうがいいと思いました。もちろん、おいしいのですが、3本100円に比べたら…と思ってしまいました。
