    Shizuoka Iwata-shi Mitsuke 2452
Hosting its completion and opening ceremony in 1875, this elementary school building, with wooden Giyofu style (pseudo-Western-style architecture), is the oldest one in Japan. Currently, it exists as an educational resources museum, with exhibits of educational resources and classroom recreations in the interior of this five-story Western-style building. It was used as an elementary school building until 1922, and then as Mitsuke Middle School, a teachers' training school, a judo exercise hall, and a women's sewing school. Along with the private library, Iwata Library, on the north side, it is designated as National Historical Ruins. Every year in August there is an event for elementary school children in which they wear kimonos and experience what class was like in the Meiji and Taisho periods.

    訪問日は月曜日なので残念ながら休館でした。説明書からですが、ここは明治8年に造られた現存する日本最古の木造擬洋風小学校校舎です。見附天神に行く途中に有りました。無料のようですよ。

This hatago (inn) was built in 1836 during the Edo period. The main building recreates the original appearance as a historical resources museum, and exhibits travel tools and everyday items. The two storehouses are used as a gallery and a Japanese-style restaurant, whereas the multipurpose hall or exhibition training hall can be employed as exhibition spaces. Currently, after 170 years have passed since its creation, the precious building is towards to the Tokaido, so it was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1998.

    Shizuoka Makinohara Katahama 1032
The remains of the residence of the Ohgane family, who were the feudal warlords of the early Edo period (1603-1868). 300 years ago, in the middle of the Edo period, the house was built with earthen floors and hette, a tatami room, and other remains that remind us of the lifestyle of the past. The garden is planted with hydrangeas, irises, hibiscuses, and other seasonal flowers.

    Shizuoka Fujieda-shi Tanaka 3-14-1
These manor ruins are located in southeast corner of the Tanaka Castle. The castle lord's manor (villa) was established in the garden of the Honda family, who served as Tanaka clan lord in the late Edo period, and was said to be a spot for enjoying the scenery in all four seasons. At the time, it was known as a great place for flower-viewing and moon-viewing, with an artificial hill, a fountain, and a tea house set up. Currently, the entire area of the garden remains are prepared as ruins and a park, with the Tanaka Castle main hall tower, the tea house, and the Chorakuji-mura storehouse being moved and recreated. The articles from the buildings inside the castle still remain today, which is extremely rare, so it has been registered as a Municipal Cultural Property.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
