Other Sightseeing Spot Spots in Oi River / Yaizu / Kakegawa Area

  • Kamikurasawa Sengamachi Rice Field Terraces
    Travel / Tourism
    Shizuoka Kikugawa-shi Kurasawa
The terraced rice paddies, called "Senkura," meaning a thousand rice paddies by the local people, are located at the end of the hill east of the Kamikurasawa Public Hall. The area is also noted for its diverse ecosystem, including Japanese red-legged frogs, loach, and the seven grasses of autumn.
  • Makinohara Daichaen
    Travel / Tourism
Shizuoka Shimada-shi Kanaya Fujimicho Surrounding area
This tea garden spans the area between the plains downriver on the Oigawa river and the Kiku River. A vast green-colored carpet spreads on top of a plateau at an elevation of 100 to 200 meters. The tea garden got its start when samurai traveling with the Tokugawa clan abandoned their swords and started cultivating. Then, Kawagoshi-ninsoku (coolies crossing a river on foot) pitched in, and the local farmers eventually took over, and the garden developed into Japan's biggest tea garden. Currently, it comprises 40% of the tea production in Shizuoka. From the Makinohara Park located in one area, you can see the Oi river below, and on a clear day, you can see out to Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay.
  • Sasamagawa Dam
    Travel / Tourism
    Shizuoka Shimada-shi Kawanecho Sasamado
This dam was made in 1960 to stop up the Sasama River, a tributary of the Oi river. What was the peak of a mountain now sits as a lonely island in the middle of the dam lake. The contrast between the emerald green of the lake surface and the deep green of the lonely island is beautiful, and there are many families here enjoying the scenery in each season, including the azalea, new greenery, the fall leaves. There is a walking path around the lake, so you can enjoy hiking or cycling. From Mt. Gongen rising in the back, you can see the Uyama no Nanamagari-a scenic spot of the Oi River.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
