This home and garden is about a three-minute walk from both the Nishibancho bus stop and the Shinyokosuka bus stop or about a 20-minute drive from Kakegawa Interchange. It is located on the left heading east from Yokosuka Castle Ruin Park via Prefectural Route 41 and Prefectural Route 69. The home was built as the residence of the Shimizu family, which made its fortune as Kaisen donya shipping agents during the Edo period. The family even served as purveyors for the region's feudal lords. The home's kaiyu-shiki garden is believed to have been completed during the mid Edo period. The beauty of the extremely clear spring water in the garden's central pond earned it a spot on the list of Shizuoka Prefecture's 100 best waterfronts in 2001.

"This old temple is known as a great place for wisteria. Known casually as ""Yuya Temple"", it has a deep relationship with Yuya Gozen, adored by Taira no Munemori, son of Taira no Kiyomori. Appearing in the Noh song ""Yuya"" and in the Tale of the Heike, Yuya Gozen offered a prayer for her mother and then planted what is said to be ""Nagafuji"", which is estimated to be 800 years old and has become a source of fame. With bunches of flowers over one meter, the blooming of this outstanding Nagafuji is an awe-inspiring sight. Around the peak season from mid-April to early May, many tourists visit to get a look at ""Yuya no Nagafuji"" and the 17 wisteria trees here."

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
