    Travel / Tourism
    Shizuoka Pref. Kamogunmatsuzakichou Kumomi
This coast with a head-on view of Mt. Fuji is popular for its beautiful scenery, for its seashore footbaths, and for the Akaihama open air baths located a walking distance away. These hot springs are great because you are allowed to wear swimsuits, meaning that if you get cold you can jump straight in and warm up. Note that while there are showers and toilets, there are no changing rooms or other beachside facilities, so prepare ahead of time.

Yumigahana Onsen Public Bath is a municipally-owned bathing facility in the town of Minamiizu-machi, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, a spot where visitors can easily experience the waters of Shimogamo Hot Spring. Since it is located just a five-minute walk from the scenic and popular Yumigahama sea bathing area, many customers stop by for a hot bath after swimming in the sea. The wooden interior is reminiscent of days gone by, and the natural light pouring into the bathing areas from the windows gives them a bright, spacious feeling. The retro-style tile bathtubs are large enough to hold 15 people, and guests can relax and imagine that they’re at a neighborhood public bath.

This museum is located about a 120-minute drive from Numazu Interchange on the Tomei Expressway via National Route 136. It exhibits one of the few skeletal specimens of a North Pacific right whale in the world. The immature whale, which beached itself in Kumomi Port in 1977, was 11.5 meters long and weighed 22 tons at the time of its death. Efforts were made to save the whale, as there are only a few thousand North Pacific right whales left in the wild, with most of them in the southern hemisphere. However, these attempts ultimately proved futile and the whale was preserved as a skeletal specimen after it died of emaciation. Other exhibits at the museum include the equipment used in the fishing of tengusa (red algae), a specialty of Kumomi Port.

This sushi shop located approximately seven minutes on foot from Izu-Inatori Station is a famous shop that has been serving up kinmedai (red bream) nigiri sushi for over 30 years. Starting with the local Inatori kinmedai which is said to be particularly high quality even among Izu kinmedai, they also source wild local fish such as buri (yellowtail), hirame (flounder) and madai (another type of red sea bream) from a fishmarket that is within close walking distance. When the surface of the kinmedai is quickly seared, it takes on an exquisite taste that allows one to experience both the sweetness of the fat and the umami flavor. Enjoying sushi as a set with arajiru (fishhead soup made with kinmedai) is also popular.
