Located close to the popular sightseeing spot Kawazu Nanadaru in Kawazu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture is this huge double loop bridge stretching 1.1 kilometers in length, 80 meters in diameter, and 45 meters in height. Learning lessons from previous landslides caused by earthquakes, the National Route 414 was completed and the bridge has been constructed for cars to travel up or down the steep slope by traveling around two large loops. The loops of the road encircle a car park operated by the town. The bridge is a popular Kawazu sightseeing spot where you can enjoy the natural Izu greenery, and during the Kawazu cherry blossom festival the cherry blossom trees at the bottom of the bridge are all lit up at night.

This bridge is famous for its Kawazu-zakura cherry blossoms, which became the town flower of Kawazu Town in 1975. It is also popular for being lit up during the annual Kawazu-zakura Cherry Blossom Festival. The 8,000 Kawazu-zakura cherry blossoms planted along the banks of the Kawazu River and throughout the town are notable for their long one-month blooming period and for having pinker petals than Yoshino cherries. The bridge and its enjoyable nighttime cherry blossoms are a must-see.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
