    Shimoda, Shizuoka prefecture 1-18-26
This temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect in Shizuoka Prefecture’s Shimoda City was the Shimoda magistrate’s office at the end of the Edo Shogunate, and served as lodgings for the Shogunate government officials during Japan-U.S. negotiations then. It is famous as a temple where Kaishu Katsu gave an audience to Yodo Yamauchi, the feudal lord of Tosa, and had him pardon Ryoma Sakamoto’s crime of becoming a lordless samurai. The room where this happened has been left as it was at the time. On the premises is the grave of the geisha Okichi, who met an unnatural death after serving the American consul Townsend Harris, and there is also the Tojin Okichi Memorial Hall which displays photos and mementos of Okichi.

A small temple at the end of the road by the Black Ship museum makes for a good turn around point. ;)

The Iwashina School in Matsuzaki Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, is the oldest elementary school building in the Izu area. The construction of the Namako Wall (sea cucumber wall) around the school building was completed in 1880. The building incorporates western style balconies with the traditional Japanese shrine architectural style and the exterior is finished with an imposingly striking high-color effect. Within the building and grounds are many places of interest such as the Iwashina School ‘hengaku’ (a stone tablet displaying the school’s name), which is said to have been written by the Prime Minister of Japan at the time Sanjo Sanetomi. The Senbazuru (thousand cranes) relief created by master craftsman Irie Chohachi, and the Kaikatei building, which was the old Iwashina City Hall and now rest house, are both also of particular interest. The site has been designated as a national Important Cultural Property.

"The Gyokusenji Temple is a Buddhist temple located two minutes' walk from the Kakizaki-jinja-mae bus stop. It is a 400-year-old temple belonging to the Soto School of Zen Buddhism which has been designated as a National Historic Site. The Gyokusenji Temple is famous for having been used as a venue for the second and third rounds of negotiations leading up to the signing of the Treaty of Shimoda (Peace and Friendship Treaty) between Japan and Russia in 1855. It was also used to house the first U.S. consulate in Japan, and thus played a role in the opening up of Japan to foreign trade in the last years of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Temple was the backdrop to the events dramatized in ""O-Kichi Monogatari,"" which relates to five women who worked as servants at the consulate. Within the Temple cemetery are the tombs of five crewmen of the ""Black Ships"" (as they were known in Japan) of Commodore Perry's U.S. fleet, as well as a crewman of the ""Diana"" and a crewman of the ""Askold."""

This is a treasure museum located adjacent to Ryosen-ji Temple grounds and is designated as a National Historic Site as the place where the Japan-US Treaty of Peace and Amity was concluded. The museum differs from general historical archives as it doesn’t just have materials related to the opening of Japan to the world and original documents, it also has video displays. There are collections on display with the theme of Perry, Blackships, the Nanban period and Intercultural exchange, and also a collection on display with the theme of “gender and religion”. This is a temple of the Chisan sect of Shingon—it is the 40th temple where amulets may be offered out of the 88 Holy Places. The temple was the location of the signing of the Treaty of Commerce and Navigation between Japan and Russia and the place where the ratification documents for the US-Japan Treaty of Peace and Amity were exchanged, and it is reported that the temple was founded by Takamichi in 1557. It has also been designated as a Historic Site by Shomoda City. On the grounds of the temple, it is also possible to visit the treasure hall dedicated to the Oyoshi Kannon and the tragic love of Osumi Benten (goddess of arts and wisdom). The temple has also been gathering faith as a temple which issues amulets for Izu’s Seven Deities of Good Luck tour. It is located 15 minutes by foot from Izukyu-line Shimoda Station.

This temple is in Yatsu, Kawazu Town, Kamo County. It was founded in 1319 by monk Tokkei Kakusho. Legend says that the chief monk once saved the life of a kappa (a mythical river monster) that lived in the river flowing nearby, and the kappa gave the temple a pot that is still venerated in the main temple hall today. They hold the Kyuri Fuji rite here, in which cucumbers are used as effigies of the body to aid in driving out demonic diseases, pray for sound health, and wish fulfillment.

This temple belonging to the Kencho-ji School of the Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism is located about a two-minute walk from Izu-Inatori Station. The temple is just around the first right corner on Ekimae-dori Street heading southeast from the station. The kaya (Torreya nucifera) tree on the temple grounds, which estimated to be about 750 years old, has been designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument. The tree is so famous that the temple is also called Kaya-dera Temple. The temple is part of Hachigadera, a cluster of eight temples in Inatori. We recommend visiting the temple along with the other seven temples. Visitors can divine their fortunes using Mani-guruma (a prayer wheel) after first exorcising their misfortune by walking the Fudo Shosai no Michi. Other points of interest include the temple's treasure house, which contains the Heiwa Shaka Nyorai, a statue of the Buddha that is a National Treasure of Burmese (now Myanmar).

This is a free rest area located in Shizuoka Prefecture’s Kamo County, Matsuzaki Town. With a combined store and residence built in 1910 and two storehouses, the exterior’s splendid plaster work and Namako-kabe walls (walls covered with square tiles jointed with raised plaster) are worth seeing. It was originally a dry-goods store, but was donated to the town to revitalize the community and opened to the public after repair work was completed. Inside the area that was once the reception as well as dirt floors still remain, and nostalgic furnishings and implements can be seen. In the adjacent park is a foot bath with a roof.

This temple is located about a 15-minute walk from Izukyu-Shimoda Station on the Izu Kyuko Line. The temple, which belongs to the Jodo-shu sect of Pure Land Buddhism, is said to have been founded in the mid-15th century. The temple's Amida Hall, which is located on the right just beyond the temple's gate, enshrines a seated statue of Amidanyorai designated as a cultural property of Shimoda City. To the left of the gate is Tsunamizuka, a mound erected in the memory of those lost in the 1854 tsunami. The temple features the grave of the shipwright Tsurumatsu, who was the lover of Saito Kichi known as Tojin O-kichi, the young geisha who served as a concubine the American Consul General Townsend Harris. Visitors can also enjoy viewing the light purple flowers of the wisteria trellis on the temple's grounds in the early summer.

Chohachi was active from the late Edo period to the Meiji period, and was a leading artist for plaster reliefs, which involved creating pictures with plaster and a trowel. Approximately 20 of his masterpieces can be seen up close including the Hiten (a type of angel in Buddhist culture) and the ceiling fresco of a dragon, which was designated a Matsuzaki-cho Cultural Property.

This museum is located about a 120-minute drive from Numazu Interchange on the Tomei Expressway via National Route 136. It exhibits one of the few skeletal specimens of a North Pacific right whale in the world. The immature whale, which beached itself in Kumomi Port in 1977, was 11.5 meters long and weighed 22 tons at the time of its death. Efforts were made to save the whale, as there are only a few thousand North Pacific right whales left in the wild, with most of them in the southern hemisphere. However, these attempts ultimately proved futile and the whale was preserved as a skeletal specimen after it died of emaciation. Other exhibits at the museum include the equipment used in the fishing of tengusa (red algae), a specialty of Kumomi Port.

The pristine Nishina River flows just past the belfry gate of the temple, which is the 83rd temple on the Izu 88 Temple Pilgrimage. It is said to have been established in 1233 as Tenfukuji Temple before its name was changed to Tofukuji Temple. 4-8-13 Shimoda-shi, Shizuoka prefecture
A memorial museum in the port town of Shimoda which was the first city in Japan to open its port to the western world and where the American ‘black ships’ led by Commodore Perry arrived. The museum building is an impressive sight with its Namako Wall (sea cucumber wall), and of its approximately 2,000 item collection of artifacts connected with the opening of Japan, the museum displays about 1,000 of those on a regular basis. The museum houses a number of collections including models of the black ships, portraits of Commodore Perry, keepsakes and artifacts from Townsend Harris, the first American Consul to serve in Japan, and of Tojin Okichi, the woman who served Harris. As well as an exhibition on Yoshida Shoin, the man who tried to get himself on to one of the black ships, there is a display corner highlighting folk traditions such as the Shimoda Taiko Festival. All in all there is plenty to keep visitors informed about the history of Shimoda and the opening up of the country. The nearest station is Shimoda Station.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
